both rusty sabich and tommy molto have appeared in earlier books, molto with some frequency. i've always talked about him in the third person. - yeah, it's true. - and the piece of fiction that preceded innocent is a book called limitations and there's a lot of writing about tommy there in the third person. so i think that what i did unconsciously is that i just reverted to the voices in which i had talked about these characters--or for these characters--in the past. all of that being said, i acknowledge that there's something somewhat bizarre about the fact that the sections in the early part of the book written from tommy molto's point of view are meant to be the present storyline. they're in the past tense, and rusty's present-tense narration is meant to be in the past. - also, i don't know if it's the publisher or if it's you, and this is something i'd never seen before, and it's not a bad idea, and it works: for the first half of the book, more or less, at the beginning of each chapter, the timeline is drawn above the actual chapter so that we don't get confused, because
