news 4's tracee wilkins joins us live from the brandywine bus depot with more on this year's changes. good morning, tracee. >> reporter: good morning, joe. we're hanging out here because the superintendent will be joining us here shortly to wish the bus drivers a safe year. he's going to make a tour of all the schools here in prince george's county -- well, nearly all of the schools. they're going to be going everywhere today, saying hello to all of the students. this is the second largest school system in maryland. 18th largest in the nation, with 134,000 students. this is a diverse and also challenged school system. while the school system hnas se. some improvements in the last few years, prince george's county is still ranked among the lowest performing school districts in the nation. according to the most recent report, 63% of the county's seniors are graduating. that's below the national average. this year, the system s has a n superintendent, dr. william height, and some changes are coming this way as well. there will be some kindergarten through eighth grade schools this year.

tracee wilkins joins us live from alexandria with more on this. good morning, tracee. >> reporter: good mrng. when they started this program they said it would run until november or until they ran out of cash. two weeks later they ran out of cash. now five weeks later, after refueling the program with more cash, they're now saying it's time for cash for clunkers to come to an end. >> it has been successful beyond anybody's imagination. >> reporter: and now it's coming to an end. the $3 billion cash for clunkers program has run its course, offering more than $1.9 billion in rebates. it's being called one of the most successful short-term economic stimulus government plans in history. the benefits are really twofold. it's gotten the consume are back into the showroom. gotten dealerships in better financial condition and, of course, helped the manufacturers as well. >> reporter: that success has also meant a slow-moving program, specifically for dealers who have fronted thousands and even hundreds of thousands of dollars in rebates. they're now waitin

tracee wilkins joins us live in our studio about what this means for commuters. >> the plan was to ease congestion in virginia in one of our areas busiest r ioad. but they say it's not the r ht economic environment to support the costs of the construction. the hot lanes would have run from the pentagon to an area. and now they are not sure the funds will be available. this will not affect the construction already uer way on 395 and 95. hot lanes are free to car pulls and buses, but drivers that don't meet the high occupancy requirements are supposed to pay tolls. they are telling the "washington post," the plan has been delayed but not abandoned. >>> fewer people are taking metro this summer. ridership of metro rail fell 2.3% in july compared with the same time last year. that's according to the "washington examiner." and there was an increase in ridership in june, and this drop comes after the june 22nd crash, in which nine people were killed. the spokesperson says he does not know if the decline in ridership is due to the crash or economy. >>> looking outside right now, it's going to

news 4's tracee wilkins joins us live with more on this. good morning, tracee. >> good morning. yes, still not fixed. when this problem started, there were 8,000 students without class schedules. now officials are saying that number is down to just under 2,000. prince george's county's superintendent dr. william hite says the scheduling mix-up on the first day of school has been frustrating for families, embarrassing for the system and he says he's sorry. during last night's regularly scheduled school board meeting, the superintendent revealed that the administration knew about the class schedule issue but ran out of time to fix it and did not have a backup plan. under 2,000 students are still without those school schedules, down from 8,000 mostly high school students. on the first day, students were sent to gyms, cafeterias and other holding areas while the administration tried to fix the problem. the school system says much of the blame rests on the $4 million computer system called school max. the system sorts out schedules and grades and was introduced in prince george's cou

tracee wilkins, live in montgomery county. back to you in the studio. >>> we have a developing story tonight. police in prince george's county just wrapping up their search today for the body of shakita bell who went missing 13 years ago. using backhoes and cadaver dogs, police returned this afternoon to the wooded area of old fort road in fort washington where bell's confessed murderer says he buried her. they did not find a body but unearthed a shoe and piece of clothing. bell's mother says the shoe is the same size as the one shakita would have worn. police will be back out there tomorrow morning. a 12-year-old boy is still fighting for his life tonight after a serious crash that left him and three other young people injured. it happened last night in germantown at the intersection of ridge road and morning star drive. police say the four young people were in a car that was trying to make a left-hand turn when it was rear ended by a pickup truck. all four were taken to the hospital. one is in critical condition and no word
