"today in the bay's" tracy patriots joins us live in -- potts joins us live in washington, it lasted about three hours and people are dead. >> reporter: yeah, there was high hopes that it would do a lot better than we saw last weekend. and it did much worse. just within hours of the cease-fire beginning early this morning, israel says one of its soldiers was kidnapped by terrorists and after that, everything fell apart. a massive man hunt for the soldier initially. there were reports that two israeli soldiers were killed. and then the palestinians saw some of the heaviest fighting that they've seen, 40 people killed within a matter of hours from what they say were israeli tanks. and the big question is how of all of this going to affect peace talks? the whole reason for the three-day break, a moment of opportunity, secretary of state john kerry called it was to allow the israelis, palestini s palestinians, hamas, to go to egypt and cairo, egypt was sponsoring peace talks to try to extend this beyond 72 hours. the state department said one of its experts there with the delegation now.

tracy potts monitoring the story from washington, d.c. d tracy, the cease-fire could set the stage for more permanent truce. >> reporter: well laura, that's the hope. its been eight hours now, that's four times as long as the last one lasted. israel announced early this morning they were pulling out, and now the focus is what about the people in gaza? 1800 killed, thousands who've been wounded. people there now trying to venture out and just find food. there's $6 billion worth of damage to gaza just over a million and a half people live in that area. so that's something that's going to have to be dealt with now as they try to move forward with this cease-fire. israel troops are now returning to israel. they pulled out, they announced this morning after shutting down some 32 tunnels that hamas had built into israel. hamas said $100 million building those tunnels. now as you said, the focus becomes what's next. if they're able to actually hold off rocket fire for three days. the focus is going to be in egypt, in cairo where israel is now sen

"today in the bay's" tracy potts joins us live from washington, d.c., this morning, israel says one ofdiers has been captured. so clearly this is not a good sign. >> reporter: exactly. and it was a hunt for the soldier in southern gaza today that israel says led to the other events. the other events being tank fire that killed 40 palestinians. we initially heard that two israeli soldiers were killed as well as the one that was abducted that they've been on that massive search for all morning. bottom line, what was supposed to be a three day cease fire barely lasted three hours this morning as all of that unfolded. the question is are peace talks now going to continue? the whole reason for the cease-fire. one of the reasons was to allow the israelis and the palestinians to undergo peace talks in egypt. egypt was hosting those talks, possibly starting today. the u.s. was sending a delegation from the state department as well, but now with the cease-fire completely falling apart. it's not clear that those talks will continue. kris. >> thank you very much, tracy. >>> series of gas explosio
