it found father and son gregory and travis mcmichael and their neighbor, william roddie bryan. each guilty of one count of interference with rights and attempted kidnapping. michael's were also convicted of using carrying and brandishing and travis mcmichael's case firing a gun during a crime of violence. the case garnered national attention after graphic cell phone video leaked online of the mcmichaels and bryan chasing arbery to their neighborhood in february 2020 cornering arbery with their trucks and then fatally shooting him. federal prosecutors spent a week working to establish the 3 men's actions were motivated by racial bias and their animus toward black people. they called 20 witnesses to the stand, including an fbi analyst who combed through the men's messages and social media post prosecutor shared roughly 2 dozen tax and post made by the younger mcmichael and bryan. but the pair use racial slurs including the n word and made derogatory comments about black people. neighbors and former co-workers also testified that the 3 men made troubling races, jokes and we're ope

travis mcmichael, of course, is the defendant, the man who had the shotgun. close range, after a five-minute chase through the neighborhood. there was only one more charge -- one more count, and that is the firearm charge involving greg mcmichael. do we have that as well? that, we think, is coming. greg mcmichael, the older, father, was in the back of the pickup truck, you'll recall, and he brandished his weapon and threatened arbery, as they were trying -- as he was riding in the pickup truck, that his son was driving. remember, this whole ordeal, captured much of it on videotape, that we've seen again and again, lasted about five minutes, that arbery was running through the neighborhood. the defendants saw him leaving a house that was under construction. it's unclear why he had stopped at that house. and even through two trials now, it's unclear. but what is clear is that during those stops in that house under construction, there's no evidence that arbery ever stole anything. in this case, the defendants, as was the case in the state court, the prosecution

as he tried to run away, travis mcmichael shot him three times. all three men were charged and convicted of felony murder and sentenced to life in prison. allegations of racism did not play a large role in that criminal case, but it was the main focus of the separate federal hate crimes trial against the three men. and it is worth knowing how rare federal hate crimes actually are. the department of chose status declined to prosecute 82% of hate crime suspects from 2005 to 2019. that's in part because it is very difficult to secure a hate crime conviction. prosecutors need to prove not just that the defendant committed a hate crime, but that they did so with bigoted or intolerant intent. that is what federal prosecutors had to prove in the case against the mcmichaels and bryan. these three white men, who chased down and murdered a young black man, had a demonstrable history of racist beliefs. over the course of the eight -day trial, the jury saw plenty of evidence that these three men frequently used racial slurs and openly races comes to shock the
