turkey. at least one gunman opened fire near the compound. the consulate is closed while the incident is being investigated. joining me now from istanbul is nbc news chief foreign correspondent richland engel. what is the latest there? >> aiman there was a series of attacks across turkey today. bombings by kurdish gorillas. and a bombing at the police station here. this is normally a very safe city. and almost exactly at the same time that the bombing of the police station took place there was a shooting incident right in front of the u.s. consulate. [ gunshot ] >> nbc news obtained this video. it appears to show police confronting a woman they say had just approached the consulate with a gun. she's cornered in a crawl space. a police officer opens fire but misses. he shouts for the woman to surrender. she appears confused and angry. the attack starts around 7:00 a.m. the consulate in a well-fortified compound was not breached. witnesses say the woman fired at least two shots outside. i woke up hearing police yelling stop, stop get on the ground. and then the area running. >> the entire area has been sealed off. witnesses say after the
