ucla, studied physics? walt: well, i went back to college as a freshman after 6 1/2 years in the service. and it's because i realize that, in the marine corps, even in those days, without a college education, i wasn't going to go very far. i didn't expect them to be able to send me to test pilot school, for example. i didn't have the background that they were looking for. so i took a career path, which it turns out is the only way that i ever would have made it as an astronaut. i went out and spent the next eight years, full-time student, flying with a marine corps reserve, working on a bachelor's, master's, and eventually a ph.d. in physics. which i did not complete. >> i want to talk about why you didn't complete it in a moment, but did you go to ucla and study physics, thinking that someday i'm going to become an astronaut? was that the next thing? walt: no. it was not. i've lived my whole life, as i said earlier, just trying to do the best at this stage, because it's going to make it easier the next sta

and i was aided enormously by the librarian and archivist extraordinaire, russell johnson, at the ucla biomedical library. every single day, including weekends, he buys baby books on ebay, and he's acquired over 1,800 of them, mostly from what we like to call ordinary american families or working people or people who deserve a tax cut, whatever we want to call them. and so he's bought all these wonderful baby books, and they were kept almost exclusively by mothers. you may have some in your family collections at home. they document the care and treatment of infants, and they also show us infants changing material worlds, how they introduce people to ideas from developmental psychology, how they connected families to the federal government, and the ways they enhanced the sort of the cultural power of health professionals. now, i want to make clear that i examined a lot of other materials besides the baby books. i looked at folklore. i looked at the records of japanese-american internment camps, particularly the newspapers. i looked at the records of nurses on native american reservation

he was born and raised in los angeles, he got his ba at ucla and his law degree from uc berkeley. he discovered victor wolfenstein when he took a class on woody guthry and the politics of protest. that brings back memories, right? judge eto joins the l.a. county district attorney's office in 1977. he was one of the first four lawyers to staff the hard core gangs unit which developed the model for dealing with gang elated crime that has been used in the rest of the country since then -- gang related -- he was appointed to los angeles superior court in 1989. and served there until he retired just a couple years ago. so judge eto has been an ardent advocate for equal language access to the courts. that's been one of his contributions to the los angeles courts and criminal justice system. he has served on the judicial council court interpreters advisory panel and taught the effective use of spoken language interpreters to other judges. so on behalf of the department of political science, i am honored to welcome judge eto.
