following all of this, our ian lee joins us live in cairo, egypt. t of all, the fact that this happened so close to baghdad, it's a big deal. what more can you tell us? >> that's right, george. we're getting an update. now we're hearing that seven people have been killed and 24 wounded. what we're seeing by isis now are these sleeper cells being activated around the country. as we've seen them lose territory with the advancement of iraqi security forces as well as the peshmerga. we've seen an increase in the number of attacks like that. this one happening just north of baghdad. also, last wednesday, there was a string of suicide bombings that killed more than 90 people, so this is a change really in the tactics, a shift, if you will, in the tactics that isis is using going from more conventional battlefield tactics when we see the two sides go head-to-head to moving to these sleeper cells. >> and talking specifically about this target again that isis tried to storm their way inside a cooking gas plant, what's the significance, if any? >> this is real

cnn's becky anderson is live for us in cairo. nic robertson international d diplomatic reporter is in crete. becky you interviewed the egyptian for many. they were first out of the gate saying this was likely terrorism. i wonder if today the foreign minister shares that view? >> they haven't ruled it out. but they are keeping an open mind. and rightly so i think. we talked about a lot of issues, not least this ongoing search in the mediterranean. he said it isn't clear how long that will take. but did say that egypt was very grateful for the international effort and help. that is being implemented there and the you thiu.s. amongst otht was involve. he said it's important now they retrieve the black box and data programming in order they can begin to provide some sort of picture of what happened and why. not least the foreign minister told me to provide some sort of closure for the families of the victims. lest we forget there were 66 souls on board this flight. we also talked about the claims of smoke in the cabin of the aircraft.

nbc's aman there for us in cairo. we're joined by chief security officer. sean let's go straight to the video. we're just getting those pictures in today of the debris and when you look at the pictures here themselves, what could -- would you be able to tell if you're down there looking at all of these pieces? >> you know the physical evidence is such a critically important piece of the investigation. investigators will be looking for any reminisces of residue, explosive residue and also be k look for how the aircraft actually impacted the water. did it break up in the sky over the water and flitter out across many miles or did it actually land intact? they'll be looking for the shell of the aircraft to see if there was an explosion. how that helped to shatter the aircraft. >> so sean, looks like we have a couple of dozen pieces of debris at least from this video. look at it specifically for me if you can what do you see if anything from this? >> you look at the life vest. they're typically stored underneath in a case and shell underneath the aircraft seat.

in cairo. jeffrey thomas editor in chief at airlinerating.com joins us live. to start by talking about four different scenarios that investigators are looking into. the first, a smuggled bomb, the idea of terrorism. what are your thoughts? is that possible? >> if it is a bomb, we simply don't know that yet, and the u.s. believes that terrorism is involved likely in that scenario, yes, it could well and easily -- more easily, i should say, been smugged on some of the earlier stops this plane made. eritrea, tunis and tunisia, it stopped twice there before going back to cairo and charles de gaulle. i think it would be more difficult to smuggle a device on at charles de gaulle so there's a body of opinion suggests that some area placement of such a device if that turns out to be what happened is possibly more likely. >> so you talk about the second scenario, the idea that someone on the ground at charles de gaulle could also have been involved. let's talk about this other possibility of a technical issue on board the plane, given the new information that we have.

in greece. cnn's senior correspondent jim bittermann is live. we are also tracking the underwater search for clues. ian lee is live for us live in cairo. talk about the investigation. on what is the focus right now, ian? >> reporter: as you guys just point out, we do have that new information coming from the french about the acar system which basically sends information about the plane down to the ground. this is information we got last night as well. now we're hearing it for the first time from authorities that there was smoke aboard this plane minutes before it crashed. this is going to be crucial to the investigation. but right now egyptian officials, the military with their international partners, are scouring for the remains of the plane. they have found luggage, they've found seats, they've even found body parts but they do need to find these black boxes and more of the plane to really piece together what exactly happened. those black boxes will be crucial in determining what was the cause, was this terrorism, was this mechanical. right now that is is the main focus of this investigation. >> ian lee, we appreciate it. >>> want to

in case you're just joining us here on cnn, an airplane has disappeared. it's flight number 804. it's egypt air. it was coming from paris. paris to cairo. it disappeared about 4:07 in the morning, just a little bit over an hour ago. and again, the route was from paris to cairo. and i just asked mary david a short time ago what route were they taking, and this is coming again from cnn. producers, and it appears they took off from paris, over croatia, sort of went to the side of italy oe-mails, you'll route they have for 804. okay, this is a presumed route. it may not be the specific route, over greece, over the mediterranean sea, and again, landing in cairo, egypt. what is that like in that area, mary schiavo? >> well, it's very, very busy traffic area, except not usually this early in the morning. when you look at flight aware and other tracking services, you just see an awful lot of flights on this particular route. the -- it's hard to, you know, guess what the weather is. there's a fair amount of weather, kind of a little to the east of there, you get a little bit more -- a bit more of the weather. i don't have, i'm not finding right n
