so the usgs says this. we're aware that there have been multiple quakes reported that met the threshold for shake alert powered alert delivery. we'll talk about that in a second. they say we're looking into what happened as soon as we have something more definitive, we will report back. so will we. the usgs went on to say this. if you're wondering why you did or did not get a shake alert, it's all about the alerting threshold. now, if you have an app on your phone, it has to be magnitude 4.5 or above and shaking intensity 3 or above. which it was. well, that's why they have those questions. now, then there's the separate bit, which is where you get the alert on your phone which is like an ambert alert. that's wireless emergency elurt. in that case, it has to be magnitude 5.0 or greater. in this case, it seems that the preliminary magnitude was too low to trigger that. though again, the usgs is looking into what happened. while i have your attention, let me remind you there are two apps that you can get here

so far, looking at the usgs. they have been under 5.9. the largest has been 5.9. >> sandhya, a couple of points. one, we know there have now been 25 , so more aftershocks have happened since he presented that information, and dr. lisi jones, that has been putting out great information now with caltech, a longtime geologist, automated system he said automatic systems that locate quick sometimes get confused. initially, people were reporting it as one in smith valley, 1.9, and a 4.8 in farmington near the san joaquin county area. now, they have taken the one from stockton county away. cheez-it automatic systems do get confused, especially since there are very few stations in that area, right? and we talked about that, how the sensors there, they kind of read that as two separate events web pages get updated when those mistakes are corrected, so if you look now, no matter earthquake near stockton, vote don't tell the folks there. they felt the shaking there, but it all resonated from the smith valley event, which is a 5.9. >> what you take a

fortunately though, no reports of any injuries, but it was followed by a number of aftershocks, the usgs says. this is a seismically active area. we did recently have, um, a number of earthquakes ranging from the ridgecrest north quakes, which was sort of southeast of sierra nevada mountains in 2019 around independence day, and there have been a couple of other ones out in the. i thought that probably didn't make the news as much because they didn't impact a lot of people. what things do actually happened fairly regularly in nevada, and eat the errors, but they often don't impact a lot of people. so a lot of time you could fly under the radar. the usgs initially located this quake near stockton, though they're automated system through their automated system, but they say that was apparently a sensor error. meantime, we're hearing that there may be some road closures in the sierra due to rock slides related to the quakes. we're continuing to follow this breaking story with more information as it comes in now to that deadly shooting in east oakland that left a man dead and another man her.
