joining me is shimon prokupecz and our van jones. doctor, i want to start with you, african-americans make up 50% of the population. 42% of coronavirus deaths. louisiana, african-americans make up a 3rd of the population. michigan it is about 14% of the statewide population, more than 40% of the deaths in michigan from covid-19 in the african-american community. it is a combination of things, i am sure. what is your biggest take away and why this is happening and what can be done? >> so first of all, we have to be clear that in december of 2019, none of us was immune, right? all of us should have an equal opportunity of being infected. but, this virus has done is taken away the mass of the near and equal opportunity of society. what's happening is black folks are getting infected more because they are exposed more and once infected they're dying more because they have their bodies, our bodies have born the burden of chronic -- active neglect of the community. when i look at it is because of structural racism which puts in the forward

combat that people were saying that african-americans were immune to it at some point in time i think van jones even pointed that out i have that out he also brought up that as you mention that a possible contributing factor to the disproportionate effect of the virus in that community. had had another reason and here it is watch when i talk to the endemol a c.p. and 3 weeks ago it's important to note that the one of the things they asked me with can you help to spell the miss in this community that people actually can't get coronavirus if they're black that with a myth that without their defection very important for us to squash here what do you make of that with is this something that was actually happening and could that be a contributing factor to the disproportionality in that community. absolutely there is a video that went viral in baltimore city with a police officer coughing as he's walking down the street and i know a woman said i'm african-american and i'm a leo and and that officer obviously he see reprimand and because that's not acceptable that she had that misinformation and that

our cnn colleague van jones called it a death sentence for communities of color. do you agree? tell you that in the state of georgia, african-americans comprise 32% of the population yet we're 54% of the deaths. and across this country, we know that in the navajo nation, their lack of access to testing and treatment has caused incredibly high death rates. we know that communities of color suffer from systemic inequities that can be addressed in this pandemic but only if the federal government pays attention and if states do what they can to protect the communities. that's why we have government, because individuals can't solve local crises like these. instead we need leaders willing to understand the mistakes of the past and prepare for the future. and we know that unfortunately, under trump and under kemp, the preparations haven't been there. in fact president trump undid things that could have prepared us for this moment. no matter where we are, we deserve the protection of our government and deserve the treatment and support that should come, not this rush to reopen. >> stay
