vaughn, we'll start with you. what do we know about these remarks? you got to imagine the white house is going to be trumpeting something in this jobs report, right? >> we actually don't know the basis of these remarks. they were not on the book until about 20 minutes ago here. so we expect any moment the cameras from the pool to be allowed inside of the oval office. we will not be getting that in real time, but we'll be passing notes along as they come out from there. we'll then have the video a few minutes after that camera leaves the oval office here. of course, this comes just hours after this jobs report, which shows hiring in the united states cooling. this is a moment here for president trump, where his direct economic policies and tariff implementation have hurt not only the stock market, but also commodities prices and caused forecasts for economic growth to slow. this for the trump administration has been a clear cut decision and an understanding that there are going to be consequences to the economy. you heard from president trump earlier

vaughn hillyard, what is he doing?i think it's a good question because the strategy is not exactly clear. other than president trump and his cabinet over the weekend suggesting that there are going to be long term gains, of course, what are the objectives and the gains that they are seeking is difficult to exactly explain to the american public at large. and i think kevin hassett, his chief economic adviser, yesterday was pressed on the reasoning of some specific tariffs. and he equated the reciprocal tariffs that they plan on enacting in the weeks ahead against various countries, including allies, as being part of a trade war. but when asked about the border or about the mexico and canadian tariffs that the administration has implemented, he suggested they were not being implemented because of trade practices, but because of border enforcement. and so that is where you hear howard lutnick, the commerce secretary, just yesterday on meet the press, suggests defiantly that the us was not heading toward a recession. but t

vaughn hillyard, nbc news as vaughn just noted, there are another volatile day on wall street. the dow was down all day. the s&p 500 and nasdaq. they flirted with going up but were actually up a little bit a tad at midday but closed the trading day lower. the dow shedding 478 points. the s&p down 42 points and the tech heavy nasdaq dropped 32 points. tesla snapped its three day losing streak, gaining about 4% today, but that's less than a third of what it lost yesterday alone. okay, the ball is now in russia's court. that is the word tonight from secretary of state marco rubio. after more than seven hours of negotiations between high level american and ukrainian delegations. the u.s. negotiated a 30 day interim cease fire deal upon kyiv delegates, signaling they are ready to accept the plan. the u.s. immediately lifted its pause on sharing intelligence with ukraine and will resume security assistance to the country. the kremlin did not immediately comment. as for ukraine's mineral resources, president trump and ukrainian president zelenskyy released a joint statement saying the
