vianey, thanks. many are grateful for this long-awaited rain and for some neighborhoods across the bay area, it is important to mitigate rain-related issues like in the north bay, where the monte rio fire department in sonoma county were out trimming trees yesterday. crews are aiming to prevent tree branches from falling, because that could take down power lines or lead to car crashes. leaves could clog storm drains, leading to flooding. the fire department is offering free sandbags up there in sonoma. also, oakland is offering free sandbags. people who live in the city can get up to ten sandbags per household. you can pick them up at the municipal service center on edgewater drive. and san francisco public works also is giving out free sandbags. they're available at the public works yard at marin and kansas streets. you do need to bring proof of your address in is city. as vianey was talking about, high winds have canceled at least one big event in san francisco today. the sunday street fair is off.

"today in the bay's" damian trujillo live outside of palo alto city hall. what can we expect there today? >> reporter: well, that global climate strike begins at noon in palo alto. organizers say that the climate crisis is affecting the mental health of youth and so they're banding together and doing something about it. in fact yesterday some teens from the bay area joined lawmakers in washington, d.c., to talk about the mental impact on youth when it comes to climate disasters. they highlighted house resolution 975 which links a teen's mental health to the climate crisis. research on climate anxiety in teens and calls to support teens after climate related disasters like fires and floods so youth organizers declared today a day o

vianey arana joins us with your microclimate forecast. it is going to be a hot one. >> tracking the heat, talking about the fire and the air quality nearby, and what to expect on this long weekend. great shot of san jose. you can see the orange glow there. there is a spare the air warning in effect. temperatures starting in the 60s. mid 60s in some areas, but it is going to get hotter. as far as the spare the air alert, expect it to remain in place. this is going to be a mix of poor air quality because of the high pressure that will continue to build over the weekend. also drifting smoke from the nearby fires, that's going to cause an area of concern. could create pockets of unhealthy air quality. heat watches and warnings will be in effect for the entire weekend through labor day monday. we're looking at the smoke from the impact of the nearby fires. if you notice, near surface smoke goes from hazy to unhealthy, especially near the areas where the fires are actively burning. for more continuing coverage on that, let's send things over to
