the victim had worked for vta for nearly a decade.cumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation. friday's fatal shooting was the first since the mass shooting at a nearby vta rail yard in san jose three years ago. an employee shot and killed nine other vta workers before killing himself. it's still the deadliest mass shooting in bay area history. many vta employees are still dealing with that trauma. doctor michael stanton, a professor of public health at cal state east bay, spoke with ktvu about all the ways it can manifest emotionally and physically. >> violence happens when it happens again and when people are experiencing the their friends going through similar heartbreak, losing friends, you know, knowing that family members are affected, other employees are affected. it can be, you know, really challenging for individuals, sometimes they don't even necessarily show it. you know, they might act it out in different ways. noticing physical symptoms, stomach upset, headache, you know, they might not be as concentrated

vta bus and light rail services are not impacted, but as nbc bay area's natalie vera explains, the vta is taking steps to make workers feel safe as police search for the suspect. well, we're just all in shock a bit. employees at valley transportation authority are grappling with the sudden and violent death of one of their colleagues. just before 10 p.m. friday, police and emergency crews responded to a shooting at the shibuya division yard on south seventh street. we do have an operator that has been confirmed as a fatality in our shibuya parking lot. when officers got there, they found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. he was pronounced dead at the scene. i had the pleasure of working with him for the last, probably about 7 or 8 years since he was at this division. and, you know, we've lost a good person. it was a very good, good individual. earlier this afternoon, we saw a group of employees come by here in the parking lot where the shooting happened. as you can see, they set up a memorial remembering their colleague. bringing flowers, candles and balloons. meanwhile,
