looking at west florissant, there are demonstrations and protesters. what is happening in ferguson is reverberating around the county, in new york there's a demonstration going on in support of michael brown and his family. we don't have pictures, but it's been tense for the last 20-30 minute. there was a demonstration in oklahoma, california, and we'll follow those pictures through the hour. >> we have seen that happening all over the country, it's reflected here in the ferguson area. we are at the command center, where we are keeping close watch and law enforcement seems to be low key. that is what happening, where things are quiet and ramping up through the course of the evening as the demonstrators have been out. they have been affected by the rain in the course of this evening, which has been considerable - stormy, lightening, hard night with the weather. for the demonstrators on the road, on west florissant, the center of the demonstrations throughout 11 nights now since the death of michael brown. joining us out on the street on west florissant

we had previously closed west florissant to traffic at 4:00 p.m. two days ago we decided to keep it open to 6:00. tonight you must have noticed all four lanes of west florissant remain open to traffic all night. i say it looked like an ordinary saturday night here. except tonight the sidewalks are full of people. they were walking and talking and smiling and posing for photographs with officers, family, and friends. the progress continues. tonight once again, there were no molotov cocktails, no fires, no shootings, no guns were seized. again tonight we deployed no smoke devices, no tear gas, and no mace, and, again, tonight no police officer fired a single bullet. we did respond to a couple of incidents tonight, and called for a shot fired behind the meat market and a smashed drivethrough sign at mcdonald's. in total, six people were arrested. one for destruction of property and resisting, arrest by fleeing. the remaining five were for f l failure to disperse. three of the six arrests have been arrested on previous nights. four of those arrests wer

and a very different scene on west florissant avenue, a site of so much unrest over the past 12 days. the street is open to vehicular traffic for the first time in days. businesses are open for business including the original red's barbecue which is serving up barbecue and playing r&b music right down there. a smattering of protesters walking up and down, but all in all an absolutely transformed different scene than the images we've seen coming out of ferguson for just about two weeks now. today, governor jay nixon announced he's ordering the national guard to begin withdrawing from ferguson. they had been called in on monday to help secure the law enforcement command center down the road from where i'm standing. as the military heads out of town, missouri senator claire mccaskill announced today she'll hold a senate hearing on the militarization of the police next month. a response to those shocking images of officers in armored vehicles pointing long guns at citizens in the early days of the protests. while the unrest over the shooting of mike brown seems to be calming down, support

we feel that marching up and down in this tight space on west florissant is a prescription for a melee with the police trying to move the people on the sidewalk. i'm going to reask the state troopers and the governor himself for permission from us based on our experience to get a five-mile march route to blow off steam and to get people a longer range to walk and get their first amendment rights going. so they don't have to get a large crowd here and run up against riot police which is a prescription for tear gas and disaster. we're asking for a larger march, longer march route. we would like it now. >> and pastor mike, there was a request by city officials that there not be any marching or protesting after dark. you're saying that is not going to happen. >> that cannot happen even the president has asked that we would never impose upon the constitutional right of the people. they have the right to the peacefully assemble and to pro. their voices must be heard. we must give them that opportunity to be able to march and to demonstrate. the clergy have united in the city of it st. louis

the city said they'd engage with young people more, they'd rebuild and enhance the west florissant business district. this list of commitles they're making, this is not the first time the city of ferguson has asked protesters to stop protesting at night. but it is the first time as far as i can tell that they have coupled that request with the list of things that they are willing to do as a city to try to address people's concerns. people did march today already in nearby clayton, missouri, in clayton, missouri, they marched to the office of the county prosecutor's office to ask him to recuse himself from the michael brown case. protesters and local residents and local public officials have repeatedly expressed worries this particular county prosecutor in st. louis county cannot be trusted to fairly prosecute a case like this. so far that prosecutor has resisted calls to step down. he says tomorrow a grand jury will start looking into whether or not charges will be brought in the michael brown shooting. we're also learning tonight from the local prosecutor's office that the officer implicat

and from all reports, it's pretty good that the night was quiet last night along west florissant boulevard. and so, we hope things are settling down. but in the end, it's going to require that michael brown's family and the ferguson community get justice from the judicial system. and that will have to happen. >> there are supporters of officer darren wilson, the officer who shot and killed michael brown who say that they feel like he is not getting due process. you had governor jay nixon earlier this week say -- call for a "vigorous prosecution of wilson." the grand jury hasn't eached any sort of conclusion. it may be they decide not to indict at all. do you not have the concerns about this officer who is also a missouri constituent and whether or not he also deserves justice? >> well, first of all, we have numerous eyewitnesss to the incident, to the shooting of michael brown. and i tend to believe those eyewitnesss. and what they are reporting. and i also have serious concerns about the local prosecutors, about their ability to fairly prosecute this case in the interests of justice. to d

. >> hello, just in the last few moments, we're right here at the intersection of west florissant avenue and ferguson avenue. this is a procession that has come from what was the epicenter of much of the protests. they have continued this way and now stopped and surrounded. what is happening behind me, there's a bus in the distance full of police officers and now basically surrounded by these protestors who have come this way and continue to shout and protest and demonstrate here at this intersection, where much of the violence took place last night with looting. this is the same intersection where that beauty supply shop was looted, as well as the liquor store. right now, the police can't make it further. you're seeing a line. i don't know if you can see this now. the police are now spreading out, leaving the bus and they are basically creating a line and they are just, you know, pretty much face-to-face with these demonstrators at this point. again, this street has been completely closed off to traffic, at least going one way, police telling us they were afraid of the possibility that

just early this morning i was speaking with some of those out here on west florissant. many are saying now we need to look towards a solution a. white/black solution. there were two runners, despite the heat index between 102, they were running up and down the street a couple of times "hands up, don't shoot." the two runners, one was white and one was black and that's what the grandfather of michael brown's grandfather wants. he still has some struggles. >> i need somebody to help me understand. i need some closure. but all of the support that he's receiving around the world. everybody is going to know but it's just a wrong way. i love him to death. >> reporter: we were there at that site where michael brown died. it was the tenth time he told me that he had been there. part of what may work, police officers were out passing along with residents and other organizations 1,000 bags of food at the apartment complex where mike brown lived. his grandfather did appreciate that. now, you've mentioned the peace fest. i have the flyer here that they are passing out and the theme

aware that they are hearing reports of shots fired and this is at the corner of canfield and west florissanthis is just one block from the qt convenience store that had been burned down. from our vantage point, there's a great deal of attention. there's a team of s.w.a.t. officers off to my side over here waiting for some kind of instructions or some kind of news. excuse me, don. we see officers trying to go through. it becomes much more residential as you go down the street and obviously much more dangerous for the police officers that are going into -- sorry. they are telling people to turn around and walk away because it is not safe in this area. the officer is saying they are trying to find the group of probably 15 to 20 people, from what i could see justi a little while ago. as soon as those armored vehicles came into the area they started running after they set that line of fire. so now we're also hearing that the officers are saying they heard shots -- report of shots fired. so back into this neighborhood. back toward the area where michael brown was killed. another chaotic scene. we'

i think a lot of people are going to congregate down here on west florissant. death of this young man touched a lot of people. it's an issue that resonates with people not just here in st. louis, but all over the country and the world. and i think monday is going to be another opportunity for people to show their support for the family and their desire to see justice, whatever that is, but definitely a trial in this . but definitely a trial in this case. >> i saw you were treating today about voter registration efforts. you have a new role in that regard locally. can you tell us what's happening there in terms of building political engagement out of this? >> our next steps are turn thing moment into movement. we want to repair the problems that led to the situation in the first place. and for the people locally in ferguson, that means getting the african-american population, which as you know is 67% majority, active and involved in their government so they get a government that reflects their interests and community. a lot of the problems you saw this week, esp

so what i want him to do is to come to our ground zero here on west florissant or at the police station and sit down with young people and ask them why they feel so intimidated by police officers and why they have been harassed and what they would like to see happen in the future. until that happens, there's always going to be a disconnect between the people who are hurt, like michael brown and others who are still living, and government. and the governor is right there in the middle. all of the accountability is square on him. >> why do you think we've seen the protests dwindle the way that they have over the past few days? >> we've had some tremendous leadership. i do credit the governor for having captain johnson in this community. he is a native son. also having eric holder here really impressed a lot of my constituents. they were very happy to have someone at the federal level who actually shows up and asks people their concerns. and so i was hearing on the ground when we were protesting yesterday just how excited and comforted my constituents were. so i was really happy about that

while we were having that conversation, we were showing viewers at home the scene here on west florissant, again, what you're looking at right now for folks who have been following what's happening, what's been happening in ferguson, this is a far, far different scene that what we saw play out over the past few days. i want to bring in now a state senator, maria chappelle nadal, represents parts of ferguson, also patricia bynes, congresswoman of ferguson township. thanks for being with me on this friday. let me start with you, because we were talking, again, before the broadcast about bob mcculloch and about the prosecution, if you will, not so much the prosecution but the specter of prosecution. where does that stand right now? >> well, you know, bob mcculloch has stated that he would freely take himself away from this case if the governor made that decision. >> for folks, really quickly, senator, who have not been following the story perhaps as closely as others, why is it that so many people in ferguson want mcculloch off this case? >> historically, he's had more cases that have made a
