this, the security cabinet is saying it wants to bring in israeli soldiers onto the streets of west jerusalem and occupied east jerusalem to back operations by the police what they want to do is to beef the presence of israeli army troops along the green line. that's a generally recognized border between and also a move that is likely to be equally controversial is a proposal that perhaps israeli troops and the police should be able to encircle some of the palestinian neighborhoods in occupied east jerusalem to west jerusalem. we heard very little on what the palestinian authority plan to do to de-escalate the wave of violence currently gripping parts of jerusalem and israel, but we have heard from one of the israeli-palestinian members, they're trying to find a way to break the cycle of violence. >> so the solution is the end of the occupation. so this wave would end, but another wave will come. the anger will stay. and and they'll come again and again and again. >> now what he's saying is that it's a statement of principle, but certainly an israeli end to the occupation of the palestiniante

let's go live to west jerusalem. al jazeera's mike hannah is there. mike what, do we know about this incident? >> reporter: well, this attack apparently took place on a bus right on the seam line between west jerusalem and the occupied east. according to police, two palestinian os got on the bus examine opened fire.

where we've seen these measures applied most are along the fractured line of west jerusalem and occupied east jerusalem. from the early morning, security forces moved in to try and stop residents there from coming across into west jerusalem. that measure was applied particularly around those palestinian neighborhoods where alleged attackers were coming from. and as night fell this evening, again, many mobile police checkpoints at access points between west jerusalem and east jerusalem and their police at least trying to check vehicles coming across from the east searching the vehicles and patting down the occupants of those vehicles. what have these measures actually done though to stop the violence from occurring? wednesday once again a day of clashes and of stabbings. let's take a look at this report. chaos on the streets of bethlehem in the occupied west bank. palestinian demonstrators clashed with the israeli army wednesday after the funeral of a 27-year-old shot and killed by israeli forces while protesting here a day earlier. in contrast, wer west jerusalems unusually quiet. securi

end, we understand that there are a number of protesters, and as we go to andrew simmons, in west jerusalemthin the last ten, 15 minutes, reports of another incident incident in jerusalem itself. >> reporter: that's right. the police say a woman has been injured, not too seriously, but she was in the central bus station in west jerusalem when an alleged attacker capable at her with a knife. there are unconfirmed reports that that attacker has been shot, possibly killed, but we don't have any confirmation from the police on that just yet. of course this coming only hourses after the attack in occupied east jerusalem at damascus gate where a youth was shot dead after being challenged by soldiers and asked to show anything in his pockets. he is reported by the police no independent witnesses on this, that he actually then brought a knife out and there was nobody injured in this incident, apart from the fatal injuries caused to the youth. that's the situation now, and of course all of this coming only hours after there have been relative calm, tense, but relatively quiet, in -- throughout jerus

frustration in west jerusalem over the fear of where to go, how to use public transport if at all, andmassive frustration in the occupied east jerusalem where there are big concrete blocks making roads impassable. pedestrians can't even move from some areas. and, also, a quite humiliating searches going on now with the solids standing back in case somebody might have a knife. people instructed to lift their shirts, lift up their truesers to show socks and in cases, a knife concealed there -- dmais in case there is a knife concealed there. we saw in the approach to friday prayers in the mosque compound this friday that the numbers were far fewer, and people went through sometimes four, five sets of checks before reaching the compound. so, it is really a fairly, fairly difficult position. whether or not these measures -- and they haven't been all rolled out yet. there are another 300 troops being deployed in jerusalem on sunday. there are further developments as well, involving all action a whole raft of different services such as the fraud squad joining the security forces meaning that

in the latest incident a palestinian man was killed in west jerusalem.ons has the details 67 now, the police have issued a further statement about that attack in west jerusalem. they say after the soldier was fighting with the palestinian and civilians became involved. police got on the bus. they got involved as well. and that at one point a pistol came out of a holster of one of the officers and the palestinian went to grab the pistol. that point, the police say, an officer fired and shot the palestinian dead. now the atmosphere really is did declining all the time in terms of fear and in terms of resolve amongst security forces to be quick witted in respond to go any potential attacks. that, in turn, is leading to a real climate of fear amongst palestinians who are concerned about working in the -- in west jerusalem. there is a response from many palestinians to this situation. varies as to how they are responding. some aren't going to work, somee are trying to change their habits and trying onto avoid any possible confrontation with israelis. and also

andrew joins us live from west jerusalem. you have more information i understand? >>reporter: yes. some more information. and some conflicting information as well. this has been quite a confusing situation in terms of information coming from the scene and from the police as well. the sixth person was said originally to have been a civilian but now it has been confirmed that it was in fact an israeli soldier who was actually hit. either hit by gunshot or stabbed. he has died we're told and that is now confirmed. and as far as the two people . one is dead of arabic appearance and another is of arafraem appearance. there's no evidence these two men are the suspects, so it's really quite confusing. was there a mistake made about the police opening fire or not? not clear. >> right. as you say, andrew, we have to be -- it's a little bit of a confusing picture. we have to be very careful about drawing conclusions at this point about exactly what transpired and who might have been behind the attacks. this comes of course as israel is implementing security measures across the occupied terri

let's go to our correspondent, mike hanna joining us live from west jerusalem. good morning, mike.hat is the situation there this morning? >> reporter: well, at the moment, there is an area, atmosphere of uneasy calm. one might put it like that. east jerusalem, itself, is very, very tension. there is a huge amount of police presence in the area, no neighborhoods have been sealed off as yet. however, once again, extremely tense situation. now, the most significant of these new measures announced is deployment into israeli cities. this is virtually unprecedented measure putting the army alongside the police in the cities and in what are termed sensitive areas. the exact phrasing of the closedush of certain east jerusalem suburbs is important. it says the israel police is authorized to impose a closure to surround septembers of friction in accordance with security considerations. basically, they have given themselves the authority to be able to seal off specific neighborhoods of east jerusalem. this, in itself, is going to be a point of major friction in the days ahead. >> well, how w

mike hanna joins us now from west jerusalem. another israeli cabinet meeting to discuss the unrest. it seems clear that all the measures that they've been taking, such as increasing security and now this new measure of searching palestinians whether or not they are suspected to be armed are simply not working. >> well, indeed yes, the on going conflict would appear to indicate that the very serious and very stringent security measures taken by israel in recent days are not having any impact whatsoever on deadening the response palestinians say to israeli attempts to change the status quo on the al aqsa mosque compound, the status quo is the arrangements by which access to the compound is given. but that law that you mentioned, that in a way is just a recognition of the reality on the ground, although the cabinet has approved the law and concerning searches, it will be passed by parliament, this is something that has been applied in recent days, weeks and months. we've seen repeatedly palestinians stopped, the i.d.'s taken, searched. they have to lift their shirts, take off shoes, ta
