yosemite is trying to make that popular climb a lot safer for everyone. yosemite national park started issuing permits in the interest of safety. only 300 people can climb per day. that means 66% fewer climbers are up on that mountain at any given time. but the statistics for the accidents are just about the same. if you look at your screen there, 38 major incidents before the lottery. and then after the lottery when there were 66% hikers there were 35 major incidents. all of this appearing in the journal of environmental medicine. overcrowding seems to be a major factor on the everest. if you look at this line of climbers on the world's tallest mountain, it is just a log jam. eleven climbers died in the last 11 days. experts say it is because they are spending too much time in the zone where there isn't enough oxygen and they are working through their supplies before they can make it out of the death zone. we talk with a climber who used a less traveled route. >> i was heartbroken when i found out what happened. i feel so bad for the families and all the
