WGN-TV began test broadcasts in February 1948 and began regular programming on April 5th. The station was affiliated with the CBS and DuMont networks, but as a sidebar to the February 1953 merger of ABC and United Paramount Theatres, channel 9 lost its CBS affiliation. WGN-TV soon became one of DuMont's strongest affiliates before becoming an independent. On December 3rd, 1993 The Warner Brothers Television signed an affiliation agreement with WGN-TV, making Channel 9 a network affiliate for the first time since 1956.
