ajit pai: i think that's right. another example, rocket fiber, folks in detroit who were dissatisfied with some of the services the incumbent were providing some of those incumbents were not serving parts of detroit that a been written off for decades. they decide we want to do something about it and they run into roadblocks here nuts and -- roadblocks. nuts and bolts stuff like axis to utility poles or pipes. these are the companies necessary to provide a more competitive marketplace in detroit and provide access in some of these parts of the city. it's emblematic of the problem. we want to have a light touch approach because, in terms of access and competition. kim hart: you have said you think rolling back the net neutrality rules will be better , faster, cheaper internet access and help the competition. how will the fcc determined that? is it anecdotal? you have a lot of ways of tracking data and extensive reports on the state competition. how do you think the fcc should continue to track that? is there a need f

ajit pai: absolutely. if you don't do that it is a violation pic in addition if it's an ethic of infringement the ftc has brought authority on an fair and deceptive trade practice authority or unfair authority. the new chairman of the ftc has did before congress inhering in which i testified as well that he is willing to determine to do just that. kim hart: do you intend, do you think the sec and ftc will work closely together to try to figure out if the company is transparent with you guys and therefore compliant with the fcc but the ftc may have considered what that means for consumers and competition landscape come you guys work together on. ajit pai: not only will we, but we are. we have a memorandum of understanding with sign that i spoken to chairman simons about the need to share information on a real-time basis. going forward we will work hand in glove to make sure that consumers are protected, we had a competitive marketplace. kim hart: you talked with reports of investment and infrastructure make

one is the sitting chairman of the f.c.c., ajit pai. chairman pai has led a fascinating life, one punctuated by hard work and success. he had his beginnings in buffalo. he traced a line through canada. it unfolded in a small town of parsons kansas, where chairman pai grew up with his parents, first-generation immigrants from southern india. he was on to harvard after that and then the university of chicago for his law degree pai's resume prior to his employment with the f.c.c. isressive. he worked for a federal judge, worked in the justice department titrust and legal policy divisions. he gained practical experience in the private sector. he served here in the senate as committee staff. he even won a marshal fellowship. he also worked in several positions within the f.c.c. itself. when president obama nominated pai to serve as an f.c.c. commissioner back in then, -- 2011 the senate confirmed him on a voice vote. when the senate considers his nomination again today i hope senators will come together to give him strong support one more tim

federal communications commission chairman ajit pai issued a major order tuesday titled "restoring internetreedom," in which he outlined his plan to dismantle landmark regulations that ensure equal access to the internet. pai described his plan to overturn rules put in place by the obama administration during an interview with the heritage foundation. toessentially, my proposal repeal the obama administration's heavy-handed regulations adopted two years ago on a partyline vote that regulated the internet. what i'm proposing to do is get rid of those regulations. juan: pai's proposal would repeal net neutrality rules that bar internet service providers from stopping or slowing down the delivery of websites, and stop companies from charging extra fees for high-quality streaming. a formal vote on the plan is set for december 14. amy: ajit pai said his plants have broad support. eric schneiderman said he is investigating significant numbers of fake, it's filed with the federal communications commission in its review of net neutrality rules. in the past six months, he said .he fcc for more, we'r

in this remarkable moment, a joke made by ajit pai when he was the featured speaker last week at the deral communications bar association's annual dinner. in response to accusations that he's a corporate shill for the telecommunications industry, pai is a former for ice a lawyer, he played what he jokingly called a "leaked, 14-year-old video" that was actually a recorded skit, supposedly set in 2003 in verizon's d.c. office, where pai worked as an attorney before joining the fcc. in the video, a verizon executive tells pai the fcc is captured by the industry, but "not captured enough, so we have a plan." joining us is the federal communications commission's chairman, ajit pai. l to have you with us. first of all, i want to ask about how you intend to take on the tsunami of resistance. have you braced yourself? chairman pai: this is going to be a political debate that will engage millions of people. we will stay focused on the facts and the law. americans believe in a free and open internet, but they also want to have infrastructure investment. they want those next generation networks to be built out. we don't need heavy-handed regulations that saddle businesses with a lot of rules that this incentivize them from building those networks. that's going to be the course we are charting henceforth. caroline: have you had commitments from the internet service providers that, if these rules are repealed or changed, they will invest? i'm looking at the profits of at&t, $14 billion, $8 billion if you are comcast. shares have risen since that original ruling of net neutrality. they don't seem to have really been hurt. chairman pai: they are down 5.6% for the top 12 br
