michael dunn charged with first-degree murder in the death of 17-year-old jordan davis. dunn says he acted in self-defense after the teen threatened him. the jury reconvened this morning arounden 9:00 a.m. eastern time, and just about 30 minutes later actually had questions for the judge. >> the first question -- is the defense of self-defense separate for each person in each count? the answer is, yes. second question -- are we determining if deadly force is justified against each person in each count? the answer is, yes. the third question -- or if we determine deadly force is justified against one person, is it justified against the others? no. self-defense and justifiable use of deadly force applies separately to each count. >>> i'm joined now by cnn legal analyst paul callan. so, paul, good to see you. you know, you're a criminal defense attorney and a former prosecutor. try to get into the minds of those representatives on each side. what might they be thinking as they hear these kinds of questions coming from the jurors? >> well, you know, i think most lawyers watc

michael dunn fled the scene.lfriend, ordered a pizza, stayed the night, then drove home where he was an hended. what will the jurors interpret from that kind of behavior? how could that possibly bode well for him? >> i don't think it can. it's so callous, so uncivilized. if you're involved, you believe you have a legitimate defense. the first thing you're going to do is call 911. you want the police there. but the idea he left the scene, got a pizza, took off from there, is extraordinarily increme nating and i think practically, i think he's in a lot of trouble right now. >> and lots of parallels are being drawn between trayvon martin and we're also seeing some familiar faces, same prosecutors in the trial. we're now seeing this case as well. these jurors have to remember that. it was a highly publicized case. how influential could that be in this case? >> they didn't do so good in zimmerman, so they might fall apart. it's going to come down to this. the state of mind of the shooter and whether or not the jury be

that said, michael dunn is still going to be spending decades in prison. then the question would be asked what do you really need to go forward with a trial if he's going to be locked up for the rece of his life. some would say there's precedent here, you have to find him guilty of the death of this young man. others would say look at the expense, a tremendous expense by coming back. we should point out angela curry, the same prosecutor who went after george zimmerman. this case was open and shut. many believe she fumbled this one as well. >> martin, thanks so much from jacksonville. lets talk more with legal analyst and criminal defense attorney. to you first, do you see there will be a retrial for this first degree murder charge? >> i don't think there will be. i think angela would have wiser as many do in this situation, we're going to take a second look at the case and make a decision down the road if there's a retrial. also suggest there's alternative mechanism. the davis people, wonderful people, came across as so kind at the press conference. they w

michael dunn, you have been listening to his testimony all week.. they have been at it for days. he's charged with the murder of a 17-year-old after an argument over loud music. and the attempted murder of davis's three friends. our legal analysts have been inside the courtroom for this trial. sunny hostin joins us live. so the jury has had several questions about the charges. they have been in there for more than 20 hours. what is taking so long? >> reporter: that's sort of the million-dollar question. i think if you look and listen to the questions, it seems that they are struggling with michael du dunn's testimony and his credibility. it was so unusual for a first-degree murder defendant to get on the witness stand, but he did. he got on the witness stand. he claimed to have seen a shotgun, don, in the car with these four young boys. he claims that jordan davis got out of the car and brandished this weapon and he felt in fear of his life and that is why he shot ten times into the car. it's clear to me and to other people that have been watching

what did you think of michael dunn? >> i honestly think he was a good guy. i think she a good guy. hates everybody. i don't think he walks around wanting to shoot everybody. i think that he made bad decisions. >> reporter: you still think he's guilty of murder, though? >> yes. i really think he's guilty of murder, but not the guilty as charged. >> reporter: first degree? >> you don't think he's guilty of first-degree? >> i think he's guilty of second degree. >> reporter: how difficult was it to come back into the courtroom knowing that jordan davis' parents were there, and that you couldn't agree on a charge -- >> it was hard. >> reporter: related to his death. >> we were confident and cool with it, but when he had us back we got really nervous because we didn't know if. throws out the whole case, is she going retie him? is she satisfied with what happened, going to do more? is jordan ever going get justice? we did not know, and walking back in to there i got so nervous, because i'm just like -- what if we completely messed up? >> reporter: do you feel like you messed up? do you fe

michael dunn's family is speaking out as well.rs, talking to abc's "good morning america." >> i love him so much. he's my best friend. i can't imagine living life without him. if he sees no other way, he's going to do. >> going to bring in nancy grace. nancy, right out of the gate, your reaction to what happened saturday night? >> i have to tell you playing what you just played, that makes me hurt for her because we all look up to our fathers or most of us do and believe what they say and we are always on their side, but that is just not what happened. my reaction. my reaction is a, i believe he is going to jail. he is looking at 60 or 90 years behind bars depending on what the judge does. other than that, i'm stumped. i don't understand the jury's thinking. if they thought it was self defense, it would have been an out right not guilty. to me, it's more like they found him guilty for missing the use of the car. not for trying to kill and killing jordan davis. >> how does this work? i'm honestly confused. they are going back and f

i think that this case is coming down to michael dunn's credibility, michael dunn's version of events which is very rare for a defendant to do in a first degree murder case. really almost in any case. i think they are dissecting his testimony. if they believe that jordan davis, if they believe michael dunn and jordan davis stepped out of that car with a shotgun, tried to attack him, they may acquit in this case. i think this is going to be the crucial day. most juries do come back on a friday, they don't want to spend the weekend in sequestration. they have a lot of work ahead of them. i think they are almost done. when the judge released them for the night they don't look tired. they don't look like they are not cohesive. they look like they are prepared to continue doing some hard work. >> deliberations under way. we'll keep our eye on it. still to come, former olympian johnny weir known for those over the top outfits. he's not holding back. some people are confused about johnny wer. they say he's not doing enough to support gay rights. talk about that next. when you order the works

michael dunn testified, which is very unusual in a first degree murder case. but he testified that he was in fear for his life and that is why he shot into that car ten times. he said that he saw a shotgun that jordan davis got out of the car brandishing one. the boys in the car said that is not true that he never got out of the car. it's clear from all of their questions, not just today's question and all of their questions but the questions seem to indicate they're struggling with self-defense. i think what is very interesting is if you read the questions today and the questions yesterday, it's pretty clear they may have reached a consensus as to the attempted murder counteds, but are still struggling with the first degree murder count as it applies to -- as it relates to jordan davis and his death. >> and what does happen if they do have some emphatic, very certain decisions on some counts but then they're potentially hung on the others? will the judge sago back at it again in perpetuity or does he want a consensus on every count? >> that's a great question

michael dunn could face in prison. suv full of teens and three of the bullets struck and killed jordan davis. dunn said he fired in self defense and he said davis and three friends were armed and threadened him. the defense attorney told chris cuomo. they said they saw the teens trying to stash a weapon after that shooting. >> he never raised his voice and never cursed and used racial slurs and a sign of anger. he escalated it and when my client went to react, it got worse. he grabbed a weapon and put it against the door. >> what weapon. what do you mean he grabbed the weapon? what proof was there? >> you are almost asking us to disprove there wasn't. if you watch the trial, the suv drove over 100 yards away. we have independent sentence who is saw them get out. when the witnesses called 911, the exact words are they are trying to stash something from the vehicle. we drove back to call for help. they are in a safe plaza apparently with witnesses around them. they had no idea that two people were on the home with 911 wa
