obama for this incredible opportunity. to say that she has changed my life is truly an understatement. there's no doubt that designing the first ladies' inaugural gown has been the single greatest personal and professional accomplishment in my life so far. what an honor. i could never have imagined that, as a 26-year-old thai wan born immigrant who came to the united states with a dream of becoming a fashion designer that i would one day be standing here today. i've learned first-hand that america is truly a land of opportunity. over the past year and a half, many people have asked me what it felt like when i first learned the first lady had chosen to wear my gown to the inauguration. frankly, i had no idea my design was being seriously considered until i along with the rest of the world saw mrs. obama step out on television. imagine my surprise. not only to see history in the making but to be actually a part of this incredible moment. many people also ask me about inspiration for the gown. what was going through my mind.

i also think the russians viewed that they have leverage with the obama administration. they viewed that the agreement was more important for it obama than for moscow, and that led them to press hard in the negotiations, and they never quite got beyond 97%. number three, and maybe the most important, this agreement like any other agreement between moscow and washington, it brings into the debate the whole relationship itself. i want to remind you that for the russians, they are still operating under a military doctrine which identifies that principally the united states and nato is the number one risk or a threat to their security. our strategic outlook are quite different. the united states -- i think that we have really moved on from the cold war and we're looking at a different threat environment. the russians are not quite the same and that is a problem. it is clear that some political forces and military forces were obstructing the agreement at the tail end. but we got it. the other point i would make is that the role of nuclear weapons is asymmetry for washington a

obama has no answer on that. except to, what appears to become a weakening of our deterrent. >> i don't think it is inconsistent. i think as far as pursuing a new nuclear policy on international scale. on the other hand, trying to deal with iran as a separate issue. iran is a problem. it is a problem as far as afghanistan is concerned, as far as iraq is concerned. it is a country that is not going away. but you don't deal with that necessarily through arms control discussions. >> i just don't agree that if rogue states get nukes we will not unilaterally disarm -- we will threaten to use nukes' if they use against us. that is essential posture will remain unchanged. >> the assumption is the rogue states will cooperate with the international nuclear agreement, which by their very definition, they are extraordinarily unlikely to do, which means all bets are off. we can still threaten to use our nuclear weapons against them. >> that is what is wrong with the obama change of policy. one of the key elements is the unit

obama joked he was black before the election. he won his first victory in iowa, a state that's 96% white. we are a long way as a country from the simple stupid brutal racism. that said, i don't think you can seriously analyze american public's without taking reason to account. slavery is the a ritual. we've always wrestled with it. it's been a fault line in the politics forever. and as i interviewed folks in the field at protests, tried to figure out what it was and you started hearing a lot of numbers like dates accommodate 2042, 2015 came up. those are the dates the census estimates america will have been on a white majority, and i think rather than looking at simple racism which is a reflexive strike by some before left which reduces credibility at times i think it is worth looking at it more complex. we are seeing and witnessing the birth of white minority politics. it is a politics of anxiety about change. if you look the way the protesters wrap themselves up in revolutionary war iconography the believe on the visceral level

>> because we've heard that. >> candidate obama and president obama made the calculation that putting a racial agenda front and center would be political suicide. in fact, the very slightest hint of racial issues during the campaign, his offhanded comment about not looking like anyone else on the dollar bill, led to days of commentary. it was a diversion from the press conference that he raised that, health care. all bomber realizes that focusing on those issues is a political third rail. on the other hand, it should be said that there is a venture could work on central -- on civil rights issues below the civil rights issues below the radar -- that is in the department of justice. for the last eight years, before president obama was inaugurated, the civil rights movement starved away. it was staffed with partisan appointees and it was largely moved away from its longtime agenda. under president obama, in the last year and a half, those issues were dealt with quietly. there are two quick examples. the second was the administration's signing on to read affirmative-action case. the admin

so can we really expect obama to go liberal? or do you believe to beef up that side of the court after george bush picked two definite conservatives? representative paul? >> well, once again, i think that obama will pick liberals for various reasons. and i do think the mushy middle doesn't really help that much. that's why i stick to my guns, that somebody who believes in the constitution and believes in personal liberty will be the kind of person we need. it used to be that way, you know. there used to be -- the document is libertarian. and we used to have libertarian presidents a long time ago. but i think he'll pick some very liberal one, and there will probably be a big fight over it. and, you know, maybe the libertarians will luck out. every once in a while a good liberal, a good progressive, you know, they're don't do too bad on personal liberties and they would be okay on tortures. but they're terrible on the real important issue of personal property and contracts and economically. i don't understand why -- why there is a

this is president obama's second nomination for the court.getting a chance to shape a chunk of the court, presumably it'll be a liberal, but what will he look for? >> jimmy carter never had an opportunity in the four years of his presidency and here's president obama. this is important. now, he is again going to -- succeed a liberal. he's going to take someone who is a progressive liberal likely and have that person succeed john paul stevens. it won't abradical shift but it'll bolster what -- with a much younger person, the left side of the court. and i presume that he'll do what when he's done with the lower court nominees, not be a flame theory. he won't pick some favorite liberals that make this court more interesting tgo up against somebody the likes of scalia. and some of the names on the short list that i could mention already are people who were considered seriously last year when the president chose sonia so the myer and elaina kagan and she was the first female to leave howard law school and the first female to take this prominent ro
