from the state department and the state department is urging today you be aware of the potential fororts and tourist hot spots across europe. the alert is asking american travelers to be, "vigilant" in public places. good morning. i'm jamie colby. >> i'm eric shawn. welcome to a new hour of america's news headquarters. that message from the state department says we all need to be on alert because al-qaeda continues to planter ror attacks and osama bin laden may be directing it. fox news confirming that a description of possible targets from a multi-city plot recently uncovered sites like the eiffel tower in paris and the notre dame cathedral in paris. it's been 25 years since paris was hit by master rorrist attacks with grenade and automatic weapons. just like we saw two years ago in mumbai. could that same thing now happen again? julie kirtz live from washington with the latest. julie, bring us up to speed. >> reporter: yeah, the state department officials telling me a few minutes ago, the travel alert issued today is not unique. yet, the state department officials and intelligence

paul, we heard about the state department warning. there aren't specifics in it but what are you learning? >> there is a plot involving german nationals that went over there in march of 2009 and joined up with al qaeda and some became part of this plot. that's what we hear from officials. he was interrogated by americans. germans had not had direct access so they can't independently verify what he's say bug they're concerned about it. counterterrorism sources on both sides of the atlantic are worried about this mumbai style attack. >> very interesting that while germany, france, britain keep their threat level the same, the u.s. citizens here are warned while in europe. what examples in the past have there been when u.s. citizens are under threat for al qaeda terror inside europe? >> americans are the greatest enemy of these guys. back in 2007 we saw a plot in germany by germans that went to pakistan to get trained and they wanted to target americans here. american servicemen, gis so we have seen this before in germany. >> we also und

this morning americans traveling to europe are under direction from the state department to be on guard against terror attacks there. the government's warning comes off uncovering what it characterizes as terror plots eyond the planning stages, and already under way. nbc's tracie potts has the details for us this morning from washington. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. but no specific information against europ and that's why this is a travel alert, and not the more serious warning. what we do know, intelligence officials believe that eight germans and two british brothers are hiding out somewhere near the pakistan/afghan border, believed toe planning an attack in europe similar to what we saw in 2008 in mumbai, india, those coordinated shootings and bombings there. and they believe that osama bin laden himself may be involved in the planning of this. over the weekend, the pakistan amssador here in the united states said that the cia and pakistani official are sharing intelligence and that is part of the reason why they know more about these planned possible attack

now we're hearing that in light of these new threats, the state department and other news agencies are considering issuing some kind of alert to americans, not necessarily don't travel to europe, but officials are telling us it will probably be something along the lines of you need to be vigilant when you go to public places like transportation hubs, you need to be street smart and keep an eye out and report anything dangerous. we have to caution that it's just discussions right now, nothing has been determined as of yet, because as you can imagine, it's a very serious thing that the u.s. government would do to warn americans about travel to europe, it could really prove to be a diplomatic nightmare for the united states, considering the close relationships they have with europe, but the state department says it's number one priority is protectingmens abroad. so they just want to be sure that there's enough credible information out there that would make them issue some kind of travel alert. >> so at least europe is quite large, anything specific about what region of europe? what cities

i had been in vietnam as a member of the state department working on evaluating passification. d before that -- and i got hepatitis there and came home from the field. before that i'd been a top civil servant in the defense department during the secret escalation and the planning for the escalation in vietnam. i followed that by volunteering to go to vietnam in the state department. before that, working backwards, i had worked at the rand corporation mainly on nuclear planning and crisis planning. in vietnam i used as a civilian the training i'd had still earlier in the marine corps. i'd been a rifle platoon leader and a rifle company commander. and i was able to use that training in vietnam to see the war up close. >> belva: there were instances within this documentary where you hear the voice of president nixon speaking. was it difficult obtaining those tapes and the kinds of information to go with the printed material that you had? >> hard for me to hear it? >> belva: yeah. >> it was -- it's funny. i have found that his expletives deleted in the white house version of those c
