well, as early as next week people living in redwood city could be paying 18% more if the city council here approves this rate hike. now, as you mentioned, it's not just for trash pickup but also for recyclables. and the rate hike would also affect businesses. you can blame the potential 18% rate hike on new collective bargaining agreements for waste collection workers that were reached last year and the need to pay off almost an $11 million debt owed to allied waste, the previous service provider. now, on average the rate hike would mean an extra $2 to $3 a month for the average homeowner. now, there is a way to fight this. according to city officials, if enough letters of protest are submitted to the city by monday night, by law the city council cannot increase the rates the. now, monday is the deadline because that's when the city council is set to vote on this issue. and if in fact they vote in favor, the 18% garbage rate increase would take effect next tuesday, the 11th. reporting live in redwood city, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >>> a former medical marijuana dispensary own
