. >>> this was the scene in brentwood tonight, a man buried cheflt-deep in mud -- chest-deep in mud for three hours. the 50 year-old man from oakland was digging a trench when the ground fell in on top of him. kate thompson is live with more on this life-saving rescue effort tonight. >> reporter: an intense 3-hour rescue effort. here is the trench in front of the home. you can see it is now covered in plywood off on the driveway, piles of dirt and mud. that is all of what firefighters removed from the trench, trying to rescue the man. and these are the boards they had to use to shore up that trench before the rescue effort could begin. now, let's get to the video of that rescue. this is a very deep trench. it is 10 feet deep, only 2.5 feet wide. not very wide. the man was underneath, ground level when the earth crumbled in on him. he waited for three hours to be rescued, a lot of the digging having to be done by hand by firefighters. all the pressure of the dirt coming in on that man for hours, firefighters saying he was complaining of pain in his legs and his abdomen. they also had him
