richard donohue is still recovering in the hospital.nterview to our senior correspondent, john miller. >> reporter: transit police officer richard donohue is learning to walk again after he took a bullet to the leg during a shootout with the two boston marathon bombing suspects. that night he almost bled to death. you have a severed femoral artery in your leg. it is pumping blood out. >> yes. >> reporter: you are draining faster than a body can reproduce that. >> absolutely. >> reporter: donohue responded to a call about an officer down. m.i.t. police officer sean collier had been shot in the head at close range. collier and donohue were former classmates in the academy and good friends. an officer down call everybody goes. >> that's right. hit the lights and get out there. i had text messages that i sent to a couple friends of mine about sean going down. somebody said are you on scene? i said yes. was it collier? i said yes. >> reporter: at the time donohue didn't realize it was the boston marathon bombing suspects who had killed colli

. >> reporter: richard donohue with a recovery unimaginable a few weeks ago as a gun battle with the. i guess my body shut down the rest of it. i lost so much blood. >> reporter: officer donohue's wife kim tells me at first she was unaware of how critical her husband's injuries were. >> the officer that had come by to pick me up that night had really only told me that he was shot and he was in surgery. and i -- almost in my mind expected that i was going to get there and he was going to be wheeled out of surgery and i was going to be saying hello to him and saying how do you feel. i didn't understand they were handing me his wedding ring and his badge and his cell phone. >> reporter: today she wears bracelets from supporters. anne is reminded of how much she demanded of her husband's doctors to get them to this point. >> i grabbed them probably with my klaus and pulled them to the side and said we have a 7-month-old. don't come back and tell me anything else. don't come back and tell me he didn't make it through surgery. >> you're both still there. >> bullet still there probably a so

that would have been transit officer, richard donohue, standing right here, at the time he was shot, the street, his brother, dzhokhar, was driving away. only the police are firing. officially, state police say the matter remains under investigation. the law enforcement sources tell cnn officer richard donohue was struck by a bullet fired by police. only the heroic actions of his fellow officers to stop the bleeding in his thigh saved his life. it was a close call. there would be many. that is because when all the shooting finally finished, neighbors surveying the damage in and out of their homes found bullet holes everywhere, in this apartment above the street at the firefight. at this home across the street. this is a half a block behind where the tsarnaevs made their last stand. the home has three bullets, unless the brothers turned away and fired away from police, these bullets, too, came from law enforcement. he was not home the night of the shooting, but his niece was and said she heard and felt the bullets whizzing by, inside his house. >> these are two bullets found in your h
