it shows you just how smoky it is over south lake tahoe. ifdúg you don't want to worry about the air quality, i'd say head to north lake tahoe. seeing better air quality up there. the most impressive part about the plume the smoke extends into canada. we received word they have 23% containment. that 3% containment, that's a good sign. also a good sign, showers headed that way. throughout the second half of the day, take it to futurecast. here's the rim fire. here's that monsoonal moisture, creep up from the south. stop the clock at 3:00. good showers in the area will add to the humidity. that might be a reason they were able to gain further containment. it's not just today that we're looking at for this. also, into thursday, we'll see another round of monsoonal moisture and that will be the case for friday and saturday afternoon as well. hopefully the showers will help out. mother nature working with the firefighters. what we're expecting in the bay area. 60s to kick off a wednesday. close to that holiday weekend at this point. 62 san jose.

i will show you high resolution satellite images from the same time: down to the south of lake tahoe, hard to see because of the smoke, this is thursday and now as we go through friday, it was probably the worst day for the wide-spread smoke because the wins calmed down and that helps the firefighters but did not help the air quality. as we went into saturday, you could see the smoke starting to thin out again and the same thing yesterday. the wins are starting to pick up. they will be from the south up to 25 miles per hour. that will be an issue. also, look at this threat of thunderstorms. this is rolling up toward yosemite national park. they will stay south of it today but the possibility of more lightning strikes is likely around yosemite national park tomorrow. the winds could be gusty. that could fan the flames. the lightning could start another fire or two. that is the worst case scenario. >> checking with you later in the newscast, bay area utility officials are still nervous of the proximity of the fire to the water system which provides water and power to a big chunk of the

the smoke plume is mostly impacting south lake tahoe. if you want to get up there, you'll find much better conditions. this is what we're working with in terms of air quality. we just got the latest on the rim fire. 30% contained overnight. hopefully another update over the course of the next hour and a half. we'll bring that information to you as soon as possible. now, we do have unhealthy air quality for reno and lake tahoe. that means if you're in the casinos in reno, once you go outdoors it won't be much better in terms of the air quality. what i have to tell you is right off the bat we're expecting the smoke to stay for the next four days. here in the bay area, it's going to be beautiful. good to moderate air quality here. we'll give you alternatives to where you can take the family safely. that's coming up in the next report. 63 in livermore, 63 for oakland. you're at a comfortable 62 in san francisco. heading towards the 70s later today. at the coast, upper 50s in some of the coastal cities that don't get out of the fog. i'm looki

lake level. at least the smoke will head from south to north out towards lake tahoe and reno. the change. we can get winds more out of the west which will help to push more of the smoke perhaps off to the east of lake tahoe. 59 in san francisco, low clouds inland around san jose, mid 60s around the south bay. not much of a sea breeze right now. it's probably going to stay that way heading into the afternoon. if you're heading the the as game later, 70s as the game gets started around 7:00. then upper 60s later in the evening. satellite view other than the low clouds around the bay area, not much going on in terms of thundershowers. but for areas south of yosemite today and a little further north as we go through the weekend as the moisture moves away from southern california, some of that could get close to the bay area by sunday night, at least bring more clouds our way. notice this trough approaching the west coast, this is going to increase the sea breeze, lead to cooling this weekend and perhaps push more of the smoke away from lake tahoe late in the holiday weekend. it wi

and lightning, or you see lightning strikes any way as you look close in here at the area around south of lake around kirkwood. you're over there by bear valley. these areas are very aggressive in lightning strikes. firefighters in this area are definitely concerned for the lightning strikes. that's why a red flag warning is in effect. it's been dropped for most areas exception portions of the bay area along the napa area as well. so just be aware of lightning strikes. for the next few days because that system is going to be slow to leave. the next chance of rain will be wednesday, tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow evening. tomorrow doesn't look like there's much going on out there. back in the forecast, the extended forecast they clear out and we start to get a break from all of this activity. there's that red flag warning. these red flag areas continuing until wednesday afternoon. the fog forecast for tomorrow morning, patchy along the coast. temperatures enough like they were today, a little cooler. a day with lots of 80s along the inland bay valleys and a few 90s. around the bay lots of 70s. th
