police say 50-year-old jeffrey ruano shot at police after a routine traffic stop in the mission district. the officer's partner was able to fire back before the suspect sped away. they couldn't find him for some time but then police said a tip led them to a white mercedes and the chase was on. everything could be heard on scanner traffic from the actual shooting to the chase itself. it ended up here in san jose when officers stopped ruano at gunpoint, handcuffed along with two others in the car with him. he is charged with assault with a deadly weapon, a felon in possession of ammunition, and evading police. police describe part of the chase. >> attempted to stop that vehicle in the area of eastbound interstate 80, and the richmond area, and that vehicle failed to stop and evaded police. >> reporter: we should point out police did not find a gun on ruano and it's not clear if the shots that injured the officer came from him. police also say they believe they have the right suspect in custody, and are not looking for anyone else. this morning in connection with that shooting. so priority

despite efforts to hire and keep more police officers on the city of san jose police force, the policeent is expected to take another big hit. the city says if the current trend continues, the police department may lose 100 police officers by the year 2016. right now there are about 904 police officers on the force. a new report shows despite efforts to restore their pay to 2009 levels, the police department has seen at least 100 officers leave every year. the police officers say it comes down to pay and other benefit packages. >> speculating about what might happen if nothing changes in 2016, that is really depending on a false premise which is nothing is going to change. >> public safety is still one of their top concerns but at a community meeting last night many people say with that drop in the number of police officers on the street, they just don't feel as safe. >>> there is disturbing new information about a powerful explosion at a san francisco nightclub late last night. there is also new surveillance video of the bombing in progress. it shows a man lighting a fuse. this is out

tough times for police and fire fighters in san jose. tonight they update the community on staff shortages which affect the crime and fire fighting services people rely on yet another pedestrian killed by a vehicle in san francisco. and tonight police are still trying to find the driver. details next the city of san jose says. the number of police officers on the street is falling -- and falling fast. here's the latest. right now, there are 970 street- ready officers. 905 of them are ready to deploy at any time. according to projections, by june of 2016, the department willhave 879 street- ready officers. but in reality. only about 800 will be available because of disability and military reasons. at this rate -- the number of officers in 2016, could dwindle to two -thirds of the 1400 available in 2008. that's the year budget restraints forced the city to make cuts. tonight, the police and fire departments talked about these projections with people in the willow glen neighborhood. kron-4's philippe djegal was there. sot- erik fong/willow

he could either pay the money back or maryann was going to report him to police. hansen, however, chose another option -- murder. as maryann was about to walk out through the back door, hansen struck her in the head with a hammer. while hansen staged the scene to look like a robbery, he discovered that maryann wasn't dead, so he struck her again, creating more blood splatter on top of the coagulated blood, proof of two separate beatings. he put his sweater, gloves and the hammer, along with maryann's purse, into the bag. on his way home, he dropped the bag into the river. but it was wintertime, and he missed the open water by about five feet, and it landed on the ice. >> the theory was to drop the bag into the water and have it float away. >> later, a witness saw hansen's car driving back and forth over the rock river bridge, most likely contemplating how to retrieve the bag he tried to throw into the river. once in custody, hansen changed his story. he denied killing maryann, but admitted to a coverup. he said he found maryann's body when he first got to work, th
