the bay area the seeds of a social revolution were germinating and they found fertile ground at uc berkeley with a campaign calledded the free speech movement. many saw that as a precursor to much of the upheaval of the 1960s. and bob mackenzie brought us this report back in 2001. >> reporter: as the 1950s became the 60s, uc berkeley like other college campuses was a quiet place where people expected to do more or less as they were told. but the times they were achanging. by the early 1960s this strip of sidewalk along bancroft area had become an area for politicking and fund raising. there were booths, signs and plaquered indicating civil rights and all types of causes. then in september of 1964, an edith came down from a dean of students all this political activity was to stop. the school had no idea of the result it would bring. >> you think you're grown up. you don't understand why you can't do things, why you can't put out information the way you could in high school maybe. >> reporter: demonstrations began immediate ly with students and committees putting together groups. savio stated

[ sirens ] this is what cal tech seismologist tom heaton heard early in the morning just seconds before his home swayed as the southern california earthquake rolled through. >> i was sitting there at breakfast. and my laptop computer told me the shaking was coming and then i felt it and it was -- it was nice. >> reporter: the u.s. geological survey says the warning system worked just the way they hoped it would. >> the system gave us a couple of seconds of warning. which is kind of what we'd expect at this distance. the -- the magnitude was a little bit off but it certainly worked in terms of notifying ahead o

an assessment is former labor secretary robert reich who is now a professor of public policy at uc berkeley and author of "aftershock." , good to haveh you back on this program. what did you make of janet yellen's first press conference? what did you make of the aftershocks that hit wall street? >> there is not that much that the fed can do to stimulate the economy. the fed under ben bernanke has done a great deal, just about all he can do to bring long-term interest rates down, keep short-term interest rates down. janet yellen delivered the news that wall street was afraid of hearing. ,ventually, that bolstering keeping interest rates down, cannot continue infinitely. she is going to allow interest rates to rise. that is what ben bernanke was doing at the end of his tenure. she is going to continue the same policies. wall street got nervous because of -- of course if interest rates are allowed to rise, that means that bonds become more attractive. that in turn means that stocks become less attractive. that is what wall street has been living off of. the fumes, or you might change the metap

i have a daughter that went to uc berkeley that said to me at 10th grade, she said i just want to go to general math. it takes too much for me to have to learn it. it took such concentration and extra time to get it and even at that wasn't successful at it and i feel that it's unfortunate because she could have been successful. i have an older daughter that tested very high in sat's and she felt she wasn't doing well in math and she went to a private school and she didn't get it. i didn't get it. i couldn't help her. when my third child came around he also took bralg and took that core sequence and by the time he was in junior year we were paying through the nose and i was desperate for him to go to college. every matt -- math tutor that your son is missing some steps and he didn't get what he needed. it was a lot of tutoring. it was a lot of explaining. i think he had an excellent teacher but again he didn't have the foundation. there was something missing there. so when you are saying that they didn't get what they needed about foundation, i completely get it. i say the in my own c
