several roads have been closed last night near a home in a wooded area of barrett township.ir homes forcing them to stay overnight at a nearby firehouse. let's get to nbc's sarah dallof. what's the latest in this search? >> reporter: we're seeing a lot of movement on the ground and in the air today as officers and law enforcement really narrow their focus on this barrett internship and the neighboring price township. that is where 8,000 people, 8,000 people, have been asked to stay not only inside of their homes today but away from any windows or open doors right now as officers comb the ground. they're looking for campsites, they're looking at empty vacation rental homes and cabins for any sign of eric frein. this really gives you an idea of how it is affecting life here and how it has affected life here now for eight days. people, virtual prisoners, 8,000 people virtual prisoners inside their homes. schools in this area were canceled the past couple days and they'll be closed indefinitely. we're not sure when they're going to be opened. and a general sense of unease people

price and barrett townships under lockdown. they are looking for eric frein, a self-taught survivalist with a grudge against law enforcement and considered to be extremely dangerous. here's the very latest on this manhunt. >> reporter: good afternoon, you're looking at heavily armed troopers in their car guarding the entrance to a neighborhood or area where they believe 31-year-old suspected cop killer eric frein is thought to be hiding. we've seen all morning dozens of unmarked fbi and state trooper vehicles going in to that neighborhood, cars with search dogs on board and we've also seen a helicopter periodically flying. police are checking every vehicle leaving and some local residents have not been able to go back in the home, staying in shelters overnight, some even sleeping in their cars. what we heard last night, around 7:00 p.m., gunshots were reported less than a mile from where frein lived in his parents's home and 25 miles from where he ambushed the troopers. we cannot confirm they were exchanged with frein but shots

asking the people to use common sense and please to avoid going into the wooded areas around barrett township. we are also aware that archery season is right around the corner. hunters might be setting up equipment. we're asking hunters to refrain going into these areas just until freen is captured. if members of the public that have photos or videos taken from trail cameras, that if they would review those images. what we're looking for are photos of freen and other suspicious activity they may have captured with those came s cameras. we ask they contact law enforcement. if the public is aware from past time spent in the woods of any shelters, bunkers, anything else that might be used by freen or it was possibly constructed by him, please let us know about that so we can follow up and investigate and determine whether it is pertinent to this matter at hand. we have had several possible sightings. each of those are being investigated and followed out. we have received hundreds of tips over the past week, many offering credible information. we'll continue to pursue each and every one of those.
