the zoo is trending right now, after the giant panda gave birth to a new panda cub. we sent you the news with an alert on the nbc washington app. we streamed the post birth zoo news conference live. darcie spencer joins us with all the excitement. darcie? >> that's right. the little cup is spending its first night here at the national zoo with its mom, if you're like me, you've been glued to the panda cam all night, you can't get enough of watching this little cub with his mom, unfortunately, the cam has gone down at different times today. the zoo officials addressed that at the press conference saying so many people are logging on from all across the world, they've had a hard time keeping the cameras up. i can tell you watching the camera, this little cub is active. you can hear the newborn cub squeaking on the panda cam. >> amazing. there's no other word for it, because there is nothing really to describe watching a baby panda. >> i've waited 44 years. >> people from all across the world were watching on the panda cam as she gave birth to the tiny cub inside her de

let's take a live look at the panda cam. mei xiang has been moving around a bit, right now show's rather quiet. but she has been active. all indications are good that the panda cub is healthy. but making noise, very active. of course that's good news following the death of the cub's smaller twin earlier this week. later this morning we'll learn the gender of the surviving cub. as well as who is the father. mei xiang was artificially inseminated and her mate tian tian at the zoo with her, he's one of the father candidates, but there's another male panda living in china who could also be the father. they have done some dna testing. we're expected to learn the results later on this morning. we are also going to learn more about what went wrong with the panda who died earlier this week. a necropsy and official results are in. that's the animal autopsy. so we're expecting to get some more information there as well. that press conference scheduled for 9:00 a.m., as soon as we know who the dad is, whether it's a boy or a girl, we w

they used the sperm from a giant male panda at the zoo but also from a giant male panda in china. we don't know who the father is at that point. we're told if she gives birth it could happen in the next month or so. she is the first panda in the history of the zoo to give birth to the cubs that survived. she has done it twice. the most recent time to the baby that will turn two this weekend. i'm tom roussey, abc7 news. leon: all right. kimberly: as a mom, i got to say the lady looks pregnant. leon: you think so? kimberly: yeah. she is exhausted. did you see her? leon: she looked like a panda. how they always look. kimberly: look at her! that is a chilled out woman about to give birth. leon: okay. kimberly: i think so. leon: we've got maury's number to call to find out who the father is. kimberly: the left leg is up in a more comfortable position. look for the signs, leon. leon: we'll see what happens. kimberly: hotel stay with a bizarre end. what happens to end with the baby rescue and a police call and a family on the run. leon: getting back to school. the new stress of its own.

[panda crying] kellye: that sound is music to and a lovers, the national zoo welcoming to win panda cubs, mei xiang giving birth saturday evening. jay korff has more. jay: visitors sunday to the national zoo -- >> it does not happen very often. jay: are talking about the birth saturday night. >> i turned on the news and said, wait a minute, twins? we have to come back to the zoo. jay: the cubs are believed to be in good health, the rare sight of giant and a twins drawing fans from around the world. for washington, and i think seeing the end of being born on the panda cam is incredible. jay: each cubs getting quality time with the mother and a better shot at surviving. while one is with mom, the other is being bottle-fed and cap warm -- kept warm in an incubator. and sunday was bao bao's second birthday. >> she had a birthday cake and extra persons, boxes all over the pit a cage. -- an extra presents, knocks is all over the the panda cage. studentsoming up -- across the region heading back to school. one of the newest schools may not open on time. kellye: a new high school in fredericksbu

birth to a giant panda cub never gets old. it does not matter if you are a veteran -- >> i'm so happy, thrilled! roz: or your very first time. >> i've waited years for this. happenedmagic moment this evening, and so far so good. >> they are showing all signs of being happy and healthy. mom is being a great mother. roz: panda watchers began converging saturday morning after word that mei xiang was in labor. they crowded around the camera, evaluating her every move. likes tos where she be, in the corner, with the contractions. was inseminated twice, back in april, then earlier this month she began showing signs of a possible pregnancy. ultrasound wednesday confirmed it, and now she is bonding with her brand-new cub. >> i want to emphasize, we are very excited but we are very cautious. we will keep our fingers crossed. this is still a fragile time for this cub. occasion joyous happened just one day before older sister bao bao's birthday. a will wait for an opportunity to examine the cub, figure out if it is a boy or girl. we know

why is it so hard for panda cubs to survive?his is really challenging for the mother to take care of two small cubs that need a lot of attention and that need to nurse on a regular basis. so we don't know in the wild exactly how the mothers are doing that, but what we know is probably at some point they abandon one of the cubs and do not really raise the two cubs. but in captivity, we can definitely maintain the two cubs alive until the adult age. >> brown: in the wild, you're saying the mother would often pick one, ensuring the survival of one? >> yes, but, again, those are really assumptions. we don't know exactly how it works in the wild. >> brown: well, so what do you do or can you do now? >> well, now, to really maximize the chances for both cubs to nurse properly and to bond with the mother, what we do is we remove one of the cubs. it stays in an incubator, proper temperature and humidity, while the mother is nursing one cub. then after that, we change, we swap, and it comes, you know, really easier for the mother to take
