live in the newsroom, maria medina. >> tonight, texas under siege. deadly tornadoes ripped through suburbs leaving scenes of utter devastation and no relief in sight as the state gets slammed with torrential rain and blizzard. and we're live in rowlette texas getting a close up on all the damage. >> reporter: the tornado touched down in the cover of darkness. some of the damage is pretty overwhelming. residents are now having to pick up in the cold weather. david dennis backyard shred shredded. wrapped around his neighbor's tree. >> we ran inside the bathroom, hunkered down. next thing you heard is crashing glass. >> reporter: the occasional lightning strike illuminated the twisters that started touching down in the dallas area. at least seven people died, two that were in the car when the tornado crossed i30. the path of destruction stretches for 30 miles and over 600 structures are damaged or destroyed. weather forecastest said two tornado clocked speeds of up to 200 miles per hour. tossing mobile homes like toys, and flattening entire streets. the

i'm maria medina. >> hi, everyone.'m frank mallicoat. >>> wildlife officers have trying to keep a 500 pounds elephant seal away from a north bay highway. it started yesterday afternoon along highway 37 near the sonoma raceway. the seal disrupted traffic as it kept going on the highway. kpix 5's jackie ward reports. >> reporter: the especially i am game of hide and seek continues this morning here. it's unbelievable. we have seen her all morning but we have video from earlier when she was swimming along the lagoon here bobbing up and down. she is a 500-pound elephant seal was creating a dangerous situation on 37. the marine mammal center has been out since 2 a.m. making sure she stays out of trouble. >> she is swimming, probably confused now. how to get out of the lagoon. and right now, all we're doing here is observing. if it does come back on land, then we'll take action. >> reporter: the tides are still high right now which is why why we are able to see her clearly. once the tides go out it gets muddy here and that's

. >> i'm maria medina. it happened at station 11 at 2840 the villages parkway. cate caugiran reports from san jose with more on what sent the bomb squad to the scene. cate. >>> reporter: the materials were black powder and shotgun caps for the purpose of making shotgun shells. but in the hour they were investigating san jose firefighter evacuated people 300 feet from the station. around 10 a.m. someone dropped off two milk criticized boxes here at the station and a -- milk crate boxes here at the station and they found the boxes with questionable material and didn't know how to properly dispose of them. >> they were cleaning out an old storage unit found this product and were like that doesn't look safe and brought it appropriately to the fire station. we would ask people in the future to not transport that material to basically call us to the scene to be evaluated there. >> reporter: at first glance teams believed it was blasting caps and black powder so they moved to secure it near the villages parkway and give everyone the "all clear." as the captain mentione

i'm maria medina in for michelle grie. >>> good morning. let's go to a live look at the bay bridge. a lot of people already hitting the road. it's slick out there. so drive slowly. good morning. it's monday, december 28th. >> happy monday, everyone. it is 5:00 on the nose. we begin with breaking news over in oakland, where an early- morning fire has left two people dead. we're live with what we know so far this morning. >> reporter: it's tragedy overnight here in oakland. firefighters tell us the victims were a man and a woman. here's background on the fire. it started around 1:00 in the morning in a multiplex on east lawn and 63rd. there are about four units in the complex. the apartment where it started was completely engulfed in flames. it took fire crews about an hour to get it out. firefighters believe the two people who died lived in the apartment. >> we're going to team up with alameda county coroner and opd, get the fire victims

. >> i'm maria medina. the newly released federal emergency response plan lays out scenarios for worst case scenarios for el nino. anne makovec reports. >> reporter: it was only lightly drizzling outside as city leaders made their announcement this morning planning for a major el nino dousing ahead. >> if we're lucky, we'll be overprepared. i think that's the way we deal with expected dangers. >> reporter: while we need the rain, officials are hoping it won't be as strong as 1997-'98 when widespread flooding and mud slides wreaked havoc in the state. this year the earth is too dry to hold much water. >> there's going to be a lot of trees coming down because they don't have the root structure they would have had before. >> reporter: the city's already given out 13,000 sandbags in preparation for street level flooding. >> crews have been scheduled to work around the clock. and they have been performing inspections. >> reporter: and for the homeless, san francisco is planning to open additional winter shelters
