there's a number of vehicles there, including ladder 16. we have a major tow truck that's loading ladder 16 on to it, so it can take it away from the scene. i want to toss to the video to give you a better vantage point from the ground to show you the mess that's there. the tractor-trailer part of it is in the wall. you can see the damage there, too. the ladder 16 that's involved in the accident, the fire truck has damage to the bottom and it looks like the rear of the fire truck is struck that includes the tiller. that's the part of the ladder truck in the back where you have a firefighter sitting back there to take care of the rear steering of the truck, since they are big vehicles you have a driver in the front and a driver in the back. we're told that the crash happened on the southbound lanes of i-95 southbound, but north of washington avenue in penns landing. ladder 16 was apparently responding to an accident and then appears the tractor-trailer driver lost control jackknifing and striking ladder 16 injuring five firefighters. now, pe

we spoke with the fire commissioner, a lot of people are lucky today thanks to the members of ladder 16. that jackknifed tractor trailer shut down this portion of i-95 southbound stranded drivers for hours. >> it's a horrible mess. >> how long have you been waiting? >> two and a half hours, in the tractor trailer's path, the 70 foot hook and ladder truck from department 16. >> we use the ladder sometimes to shield the scene on the highway so our responders are not hit by vehicles. >> five firefighters were inside and this is what is left of the back portion of the truck steered by a firefighter. the impact of the crash pushed the fire truck 250 feet and all firefighters were transported to the hospital and no one else at the scene was injured. this morning the commissioner came to ladder 16 as firefighters returned back. >> they are lucky but if that ladder truck had not been there it's possible that the vehicle would have gone on to the scene. and we would have had worse injuries. >> penndot returned to the scene to make sure it was structurally sound since the tractor trailer crash

all five firefighters injured on ladder truck 16 are in stable condition. while the cars were stuck on i-95 for 3 hours, these progress there, as well. >> reporter: this is the traffic that was stuck, we're seeing the last stuck vehicles getting by on the left-hand side. these people have been sitting on i-95 for three hours, now they are allowing them to move by in the left left lane. that was the end of the stuck traffic right there. here's the jackknifed tractor-trailer. that's the tractor-trailer blocking all lanes. the cab kind of hit a wall right here. that's why police tell me they are having a tough time trying to figure out how to get it out blocking all lanes i-95 southbound at penns landing. after they move it, they also they have to get penndot out there to make sure the wall is okay, too. it's been shut down for three hours. don't know when it will reopen. this is the heavy tow truck getting it ready to see if they can start to move it. we could see progress with it, but not yet. this is the accident scene of two separate accidents. the first a

a tractor-trailer lost control jackknifed and hit ladder 16 injuring five firefighters. state police have shut down all lanes of traffic, but have opened the northbound lanes. you can see here, the southbound lanes are closed. that's ladder 16 sitting there, they were able to drive it away from the storm tracker 6 live trailer. since we've been out here for the past half-hour, we've seen medic trucks leave the scene, however police and firefighters are still here. there's another fire truck that's on the scene. it's not clear if that fire truck was involved in the crash. we saw several firefighters get into the truck and leave. we're not sure if they were out here for support or heading to the hospital to see their colleagues. at this time you can see it's still going to be an hour or two before they clean this up. of course we're waiting to hear about the extent of the injuries for the firefighters, katherine scott will have more on that, back to you. >> in fact we'll do that right now, we'll turn to katherine scott live at hanheman hospital where the firefighters were

he was riding front seat on ladder 2. jerry fickes was assigned to squad four which is our rescue units that helps other firefighters, he was working on that unit at the time of the collapse at the time that he was inside. firefighters jerry fickes was joined by other members of squad four and and attempting to resce christopher leach at the time of the collapse. those individuals were subsequently removed from thepr. brad beakman remains in critical be but stable condition at crozier medical center. as we go through and discuss what we have for the investigation, i don't want anyone to take what we say out of context. we'll tell you there was question asks about car fires or vehicles fires that occurred in the area priority -- priority t- prior to fire, there were car fires in the area are they connected? we cannot say, we do not believe that they are at this time because of information we have. we are considering looking into that and talking to more individuals. >>> right now we're being supported by state fire marshal
