southbound 101 at embarcadero road.s where we have the two left lanes closed due to that serious crash that we had overnight, the dump truck with the bed lifted, most likely the driver had no idea that was up, hit that overpass and they are waiting for that structural engineer to arrive and tell them that all is safe. there's a 27-foot crack in that overpass, though, so obviously they have to wait until they get the go-ahead. we've got about a two-mile backup on the southbound side a little bit of a backup on the northbound side and i should say that off ramp from northbound 101 to embarcadero road is closed since that overpass is closed. taking you over to san jose here. southbound 101 just before tully road, getting reports of a new rollover crash. it sounds like that's blocking the left lane so that's the southbound side. we do have our typical delay there on the northbound side and as mike has been mentioning this morning, really pretty sunrise shot. the traffic not so pretty here through the bay bridge toll plaza.

this is southbound 101 at embarcadero road and may not look like too much right now, but we had a huge mess overnight. a dump truck with the bed raised hit that overpass at full speed, clearly that driver was not aware that they had the bed up and it clipped it. you can see that damage to the overpass right now. so here's a look at caltrans workers. they've cleaned up most of the mess so obviously we've got the truck remove there had and they're waiting for the structural engineer to come all the way from sacramento to check that out so this is going to be a long-term situation. right now, though, as you can see, those two right lanes are open. i want to talk about a major b.a.r.t. delay here. trains stuck at hayward station so the problem starting at fremont in that richmond direction and this is due to a switching problem so if you can get a little bit closer to san leandro, you'll still be able to move in the richmond direction but anything south of hayward, you're not moving right now. so hopefully i'll have an update in a few. let's check in with meteorologist mike nicco. sounds l

caltrans workers spent the day chipping away at the concrete embarcadero road overpass in palo alto. the driver of this donald trump truck decree -- dump truck created the mess, only to get back on highway 101 with his truck bed still raised. he then drove straight into the overpass around 11:00 last night. >> and it seriously damaged that overpass to the point we had to close the two lanes beneath because the damaged section is a little over 45 feet long. >> reporter: caltrans opened up one of the two lane closures this afternoon but the number one lane will remain closed until 7:00 tonight and then later closed again for repairs to a steel girder that needs to be replaced along with the surrounding concrete. >> we want to make sure we don't have any more loose concrete that could fall and damage a car and injure somebody. >> reporter: the driver of the dump truck went to the hospital with minor injuries. his truck and bed or towed away. sing as hired to work by a private contractor. the chp says their investigation into the crash is ongoing. in the meantime, caltrans says it's uncl

the latest is that black tarp that was installed by caltrans over the embarcadero road overcrossing.ight now, one southbound lane remains blocked. all the lanes were supposed to be open by 3 p.m. today to ease the evening commute. but that didn't happen. now, over the last couple of hours, caltrans cleared away all the loose debris from the cracked section and then installed that plastic tarp just to be sure that if anything may become loose it doesn't fall on the cars below. caltrans engineer has been inspecting the bridge but it took hours for that engineer to arrive from sacramento adding to the delays. for 101 drivers, it's been a day of long traffic jams. >> earlier today we had to shut down two lanes. as it progressed, when we got an engineer out here, we were able to open up one more lane. and as of right now, it's looking like we'll have one lane closed until we get further notification from caltrans. >> reporter: all this got started about 11:00 last night. that's when a dump truck from a nearby construction site drove down the freeway with a dumping bed still in the upright

however, it's unclear when the damage to the embarcadero road overpass will be fixed. the chp says a dump truck forgot to lower the bucket at the back of his vehicle and as it drove off, the bucket hit the wedge into the overpass there. you see it, creating a 27-foot crack, which may have grown all the way to 45 feet now. caltrans is now working to repair that overpass. >> basically just putting in fresh concrete and fresh rebar if any of that has been damaged. it's the standard structure of steel rebar, like a steel cage with concrete set around it. >> caltrans is using a tarp on the overpass to catch all the falling debris. a lane of embarcadero road over the crack is closed indefinitely. >>> in big sur, helicopters dropping off food and other supplies to people cut off by mudslides and a damaged bridge. about 450 people live in that affected area and they have been stranded since february 15th when the pfeifer canyon bridge was closed. the bridge is now being demolished. monterey county made about tin helicopter trips -- 10 helicopter trips yesterday bringing food,

when he reached the embarcadero road overpass the trailer slammed into the structure. the driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. when the trailer was pulled away from the overpass, crews found a 25 foot crack in the concrete. through out the day on friday, caltrans engineers and crews examined the damage and found that it was even worse than they first suspected. they now believe that a 45-50 section of the overpass is damaged and a steel support girder is also damaged. as a temporary fix, crews wrapped a tarp around the damaged concrete to keep chunks from falling onto the roadway below. all lanes of 101 were reopened just before 6pm but one west bound lane above the overpass will remain closed indefinitely. caltrans also said on friday that it will take extensive work to repair the damaged girder and concrete. at this point it's unclear when that work will begin or how much it will cost. á san francisco police need your help finding a man suspect who tried to rob a jewelry store in china town.it happened in broad daylight.kron4's lydia pantazes live in

. >> it happened on south 101 at the embarcadero road over pass. >> crews have had to close two lanes of traffic. they had them closed all morning long. how are we looking? >> reporter: we were hoping to have the two lanes opened by noon. it's noon and they're still closed. the good news is we have the cal trans engineers here now. they came from sacramento. we saw them up there earlier inspecting, hammering concrete. we saw some pieces of concrete fall by their own doing exposing some of the rebarb. they are inspecting the crack. the spot is where the dump truck hit. it was working a construction project nearby here on highway 101. the driver left after dumping a load of asphalt. the driver never lowered his truck bed. he didn't clear the embarcadero over pass and hit it with significant force. >> traveling south bound in the number one lane with his dump truck elevated. and as he approached embarcadero over crossing, the dump truck collided with the over crossing. it created a 27-foot crack. >> the top of the dump truck was jammed into the over pass. this lifted it off of the wheels

when he reached the embarcadero road overpass the trailer slammed into the structure. the driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. when the trailer was pulled away from the overpass, crews found a 25 foot crack in the concrete. through out the day on friday, caltrans engineers and crews examined the damage and found that it was even worse than they first suspected. they now believe that a 45-50 section of the overpass is damaged and a steel support girder is also damaged. as a temporary fix, crews wrapped a tarp around the damaged concrete to keep chunks from falling onto the roadway below. all lanes of 101 were reopened just before 6pm but one west bound lane above the overpass will remain closed indefinitely. caltrans also said on friday that it will take extensive work to repair the damaged girder and concrete. at this point it's unclear when that work will begin or how much it will cost. happening tomorrow... supporters of the new president are heading back to one of the most liberal cities in america ... to express their first amendment rights. it is

this is the embarcadero road over pass. it ended up getting stuck and lifting the truck up. when the truck came to a rest, it slammed down pretty hard and the driver ended up hitting his head on the steering wheel so he had to be taken to the hospital. the top of the truck was stuck, lodged into the over pass. they had to bring pulleys to get the truck out from underneath the over pass. as of now, we are down to two lanes. cal trans has been out here on the scene and from what i am told, they need to determine what the structural integrity is of the over pass, if cars are able to continue their commute underneath it. i talked to chp. chp says it is going to have to cap the lanes closed probably until about noon today. that's because they're waiting on an engineer to come from cal trans to really take a look at this. >> gosh. thank you for the update. >>> two suspects were arrested this morning accused of shooting at an off duty oakland police officer. >> he was on interstate 880 going south in his personal car. someone in a ford explorer fired shots at him near the 16th aven

chp says a dump truck driver forgot to lower the bucket and smashed right into the embarcadero road overpass forcing the closure of two southbound lanes on the freeway and one lane of the overpass. crews worked all day to repair the damage. the fear was loose pieces of concrete could come loose and strike a vehicle on the freeway below. >>> you could dent a car or let it penetrate through the window and strike the people in the car. >> reporter: chp says the dump truck driver was sent to the hospital with minor injuries. no one else was hurt. lanes reopened at 5:30, but more repair work is going to be needed. >>> police in fremont arrested two people in a mail theft case. they found hundreds of envelopes stuffed in two pillow cases in the trunk of a stolen car. 95% of the mail was stolen in fremont. mostly from mailboxes and apartments and condominium complexes. the two people arrested are a man and a woman. authorities described them as transient. both are now at santa rita jail and facing charges including identity theft and possession of a stolen vehicle. >>> well there were some frighten

caltrans workers spent the day chipping away at the concrete embarcadero road overpass in palo alto.his after the driver of this dump truck drove straight into the overpass around 11:00 last night with its bed still raised. >> it seriously damaged that overpass to the point we had to close the two lanes beneath. the damaged section is a little over 45 feet long. >> reporter: caltrans opened up one of the two lanes around 2:00 this afternoon, but the number one lane will remain closed while repairs are made. engineers determined the dump truck badly damaged a steel girder which needs to be replaced, along with the surrounding concrete. >> we want to make sure we don't have any more loose concrete that could fall and damage a car and injure somebody. >> reporter: chp is still investigate -- investigating why the dump truck driver drove into it with his bed raised. we'll find out whethe he'll be allowed to return to a caltrans project that he was working on nearby. kate larson, abc 7 news. back to you. >>> let's check the traffic on our map. it is moving very slowly through the area. yo

the northbound section of 101 near embarcadero road and palo alto had two lanes shut down after large potholes appeared on that stretch of roadway. they were able to finish repairs just before 4:00 this morning. caltrans pushed to get that work completed before the monday morning commute got underway. >>> b.a.r.t. says test trains have been running as expected for the long awaited station in fremont. a grand opening ceremony is set for march 24th. service is expected to start the very next day. the warm springs station is the first step in to extending service in to santa clara county. when that happens people will eventually be able to take b.a.r.t. all the way to san jose. >>> the hours for the bike and pedestrian path on the bay bridge have been expanded. people will be able to use the eastern span between 6:00 in the morning and 8:00 at night. the path is only still open on weekends and holidays. caltrans says the pass needs to be closed between monday through friday due to ongoing demolition work on the old bay bridge. >>> a newly proposed california license plate could raise mil
