we are fortunate to have dann cuellar, who is live in carolina, puerto rico tonight. dann what are your first impressions, your first observations of the situation there? >> reporter: well jim, it seems no matter where you look you can't escape the devastation and you look and look and see it all over you and all around you. even the trees left standing they are without leaves from the force of hurricane maria. and over here you see high rises there are people in there without electricity and no power. some have generators, where we are staying the generator is on from 6:00 until 9:00 tonight and from 6:00 until 9:00 the next morning and then no power. the gasoline situation is no power, they have to ration gasoline and we went to one gas station in catalina, it was closed but the owner says they will open up at 8:00 and people can buy a limited amount of gasoline for cars and limited amount for tanks to power their generators. >> tell me what you are going to do tonight. how long do you expect the lines to be? >> many people. long lines. >> from both sides of the gas

. >>> "action news" reporter dann cuellar is live on the ground in puerto rico. it's been 10 days since that storm struck. what are you finding now? >> reporter: monica, after waiting virtually all day to buy ice hundreds of people were finally allowed to buy one bag of ice each, two dollars a bag but guess what, within an hour, they ran out and there's still hundreds of people waiting in line for a bag of ice. the news hasn't even spread to them that they've run out and they don't have any for the rest of the day. long lines seems to be virtually the thing now just to get -- even at this convenience store here in caguas. this seems to be the new normal and frustratingly so for many people. in the absence of electricity nine days after hurricane maria flu through here generators are what's keeping things going for those lucky enough to have them but without gas, they are useless and the lines to get gas can be both challenging and frustrating. what time did you get here. >> about 2 o'clock in the morning. >> reporter: and the station doesn't open until 8 o'clock.

dann cuellar spoke with people at the philadelphia interrnational airport and street station. cecily tynan, you have the latest about hurricane irma. >> i did. irma now is making landfall over northern cuba. there are barrier islands there. typically, you think a storm this close to land would weaken, but winds have increased. it's a storm that has tremendous staying power 160 miles per hour. irma is now a category five hurricane moving west at 13 miles per hour. it hasn't made the northern turn yet looks like it will be doing so. national hurricane center has it as a strong cat four hurricane sunday 8:00 in the morning and moving toward fort miers. the track has shifted more to the west. the storm is more intense that the hurricane force winds, tremendous surge, heavy rain across the peninsula, moving inland near atlanta with flooding rain. we have hurricane warnings posted for southern florida, fort pierce to the south. melbourne under watch. it's a question of timing. it will take longer for the hurricane force winds to approach tampa, but they will. sunday, 11:00, wind gus
