. >> joined by nbc national security and justice reporter julia ainsley, she has been covering this fromt. give us the top lines of the report. >> reporter: the report confirmed a lot of things that we had heard from the ground, but it really consolidated all this data in one place. one of those pieces is that 18% of the children that were separated from their parents were held at border patrol for more than five days. no one, not even adults, are supposed to be there for more than 72 hours. those were those cages that my colleague jacob soboroff saw. it was also found that there was no database that had the location information so that parents and children couldn't find each other, and a lot of parents were given inconsistent and incorrect information before they were separated from their children. that was another thing we reported. some thought they had to agree to drop their asylum cases. this report is consolidating that in one place, and it's a very hard for a lot of these officials at dhs to swallow because they have been countering every story we have put out, and now it's right

joining me now, julia ainsley is nbc news security and justice reporter. what are mexican authorities doing and what's going on with the caravan itself? >> reporter: the caravan is on the move again, we just heard a press conference by caravan organizers informing the thousands of people that they will be walking eight hours and that's their goal for today. i want to talk about the caravan organizers, what has been the treatment of the caravan by mexico? she says that she thanks mexico for their treatment because they're actually letting them pass. are they afraid that the caravan will encounter the military as they move north? she says, chris, that mexico is asking for them to seek asylum in order for them to continue moving. but they think that sometimes that can be a trick to get them on busses and deport them back which is why some migrants do not really want to do that. >> marianna. thank you for that. julia, the president tweeted that there are quote criminals and unknown middle easterners mixed in this with caravan, what do you know about that and t

nbc's national security and justice reporter julia ainsley who i urge you to follow on social media.en on this story for months. let's start with this migrant caravan. it's drawing not only response from the trump administration but also from mexico. what is it? who's on it? and walk us through how everyone's reacting to it. >> i'd love to, stephanie. what we're looking at is essentially two groups. one is further closer to the mexico/guatemala border. the other one is in southern guatemala at this point. there are about 1,500 in one group, 2,000 in another group. and they altogether are coming up slowly. what mexico has done to respond is sent 500 police to their border. they say they're there to quell protests. there are a number of people there trying to make sure that these protesters who are there to ensure the safety of the migrants don't cause a scene. they haven't ensured what president trump wants them to ensure, that they won't even get into mexico. what the u.s. wants is to keep this as a fight between the guatemala/mexico border and not let them come to the u.s. border. a

so joining me now, elliot williams, former official with the customs department and julia ainsley, nationaland justice reporter. okay, julia. let's talk about this caravan. we have learned that the first group has crossed into the mexico border. secretary of state mike pompeo in mexico right now talking with officials. walk us through where mexico stands on all this. >> so today's a really crucial day in this, stephanie. we know that secretary pompeo sent down there with a big mission to try to work with some of his partners and get the migrants to stay below mexico in guatemala to not let them pass through mexico up to the united states. he's down there to pressure them to do that. of course, the president's been tweeting to try to pressure mexico to do that. just last night a handful of these migrants went over a river to get into mexico. they didn't go through this normal check point where they would usually go through in mexico. but more than that, about 2,000 to 3,000 migrants about 20 miles south of the guatemala and mexico border and could be crossing as early as tonight. they have s

nbc's national security and justice reporter julia ainsley who has been all over this story since the beginning joins me now. julia, the report found that at least 860 migrant kids, children, were left in border patrol holding cells longer than the 72-hour limit mandated by u.s. courts, with one minor confined for 12 days and another for 25. what else do we know about the conditions? and seeing that the report said we simply weren't prepared to implement this policy, what was the urgency? what was the crisis brewing that caused them to do this before they had themselves in order? even if it was a good idea. >> stephanie, a lot of what this report is telling us are things that we already knew. my colleague and i reported in early june they were holding children, some toddlers, in these border processing facilities longer than 72 hours. you're not supposed to hold even an adult in those facilities longer than 72 hours because they're not set up. they are those cages that we've seen. they are where people sleep on the floor. they're where jacob soboroff has gone and seen children right t
