what's called baseball's magna carta has been on display. we are excited they are here at the library. it's almost as important in some ways as some of our other founding documents. next we will take a look at how baseball spread across the united states. we are continuing with baseball's origins and early days. a good way to demonstrate that is with the earliest baseball coverage of an intercollegiate game. between 1859 -- they were playing by the massachusetts rules. the scoring was a little bit different. the importance of this document, which was the only original that sportswriting.ly it's an unusual document. the game was part of a doubleheader, baseball and chest. day --t we also have here a really early box that shows the name of the players, the number of times they came home and the number -- number of outs. what we have here is considered a prototype for baseball cards and it's considered the earliest existing baseball car. they had their photo taken, made copies and then they would pass this out to their fans and their admirers.

so here we are in front of what has been called baseball's magna carta.hese are the founding documents that were used at the 1857 baseball convention in new york city that laid out the rules of the game that we have come to know as american baseball. what happened was the knickerbockers baseball club of new york gathered a dozen teams and they presented a series of rules that they could all adopt a standard uniform game. up until that time you had different rules and you couldn't have meaningful competition while that was going on. so doc adams, who was the leader of the knickerbocker baseball club, drafted what he calls the rules of baseball. those were combined with the rules for match game of baseball which addressed playing conditions of the field and umpires. through those two documents they put together this document, laws of baseball that the rules committee used at the convention. it is here out of these sessions that several major fundamental rules were developed. nine players to a side, nine innings to a game. 90 feet between the bases. some of

during the civil war, such as the mappa mundi, the chained library and we have one of the first 17 magna cartasas the equivalent status of a world heritage site in a single object. mappa mundi is usually translated as "cloth of the world". it is by far the largest mediaeval world map to survive. the map has pilgrim routes and trade routes that you can trace on it, but it is not primarily intended as a navigational map. hereford it is depicted on the map and it is shown more in wales than england. it has almost been rubbed out because, over the centuries, people have put their fingers on hereford ? "this is where we are". it shows lots of strange peoples and beasts on it. some of them are very odd to us today. all sorts of people of different races, some of them depicted with dogs heads or faces on their chest. the map has one or two discriminatory images. there's a not very complimentary image ofjews. there are lots of other images around the outside of the map which reflect races that people were perhaps suspicious about or did not know anything about. but these also appear in pliny‘s natural
