you are live in the "cnn newsroom." and across the united states right now, the number of people infected, in hospitals and dying from the coronavirus is not going down. in fact, it is on the rise. the total number of u.s. cases, 3.2 million, that's more than the population of 21 states. think about that. and this is where new cases of the virus are shooting up. in some states, significantly. and this just into cnn. the cdc is updating its estimate of how many people infected with the coronavirus have no symptoms at all. about 40% of people with the virus are not physically sick, according to the cdc. that's up from their estimate of 35% back in may. researchers also saying they believe half of all covid-19 cases are transmitted before people show signs of being sick. with so many states reporting record infection rates and hospitals struggling to treat the surge of new patients, president trump is shrugging off this alarming spread of the virus as a minor setback. >> is the united states losing the war against covid? >

this is "cnn newsroom." i'm kim brunhuber. >>> day by day thousands around the world are finding out they're infected with the coronavirus, but nowhere is the pandemic being felt more acutely than in the united states. here's the latest. new daily infections are still on the rise in nearly half the states. the u.s. accounts for about 1/4 of the world's total coronavirus cases and about 1/5 of all deaths. more than 5,000 people are now reported dead in texas alone. the trump administration is acknowledging to cnn that it's taking too long to get test results back. >> we after never gonna be happy with testing until we get turnaround times within 24 hours, and i would be happy with point of care testing everywhere. we are not there yet. we are doing everything we can to do that. what can we do? we can test everybody in a hospital within 24 hours so they can get the new treatments we develop. we are point of care testing in nursing homes or prioritizing all nursing homes because that's where 50% of the mortalit

this is "cnn newsroom." >>> and thank you for joining us. the numbers are a bit overwhelming, but consider this to get a sense of how many people in the u.s. right now are infected with the coronavirus. according to johns hopkins university, the total stands at more than 3.2 million. that is more than the individual populations of 21 states, washington, d.c., and puerto rico. the number of new cases and hospitalizations just keeps going up. only a handful of states are seeing decreases. the states there in green, they're mostly in the northeast. more than half are seeing numbers climb. one of those states, florida where more than 7,000 people are in hospitals because of this virus. also, texas, wisconsin, north carolina all broke single day case records saturday. the centers for disease control and prevention said 40% of those infected do not show any symptoms. the concern there is that asymptomatic people may not take precautions but can still pass the virus to others. >>> concern about the unchanged spread of the virus prompted the top inf
