gabe, tell us what you're seeing on the ground today in lviv? >> reporter: hi there, jose. good morning. we're here at a church in lviv. this is one of the many mick shift shelters we've been seeing in this city. in this room there are dozens of families that spent the night here. we're expecting more to come in just a short time. the pastor here, he says this is all surreal. this is something he's been doing for weeks and weeks. i want to bring you the story of one of the people staying in the shelter. this is bogdan. i met him yesterday. he told me a harrowing family. he was trying to reach his wife and four young children, two of them twins, just three months old, and he hadn't been able to speak with them for several days because the home they were staying in, it was the home of his wife's mother, had actually been damaged as part of a shelling. bogdan, he does speak a little english. i want to ask you, how have the last few days been for you? >> translator: i'm very stressed because i don't know where my wife is now. >> reporter: jose, we did speak with him a little bi

gabe gutierrez, thank you. president biden speaks next hour, does zelenskyy's speech change what he expected to say today? >> reporter: jose, so much of the conversation over the last several weeks is about what more the united states could be doing to support ukraine. and no one has made the case more powerfully, as we just saw, than president zelenskyy himself. what president biden is going to try to do today is present in a comprehensive way, just how much the u.s. has already done. not just over these last few weeks, but over the last few years, to support ukraine's efforts to defend itself. the president, as a white house official just reminded me, is going to tell the country that the u.s. is the largest single donor of humanitarian and military assistance. he just signed into law yesterday another $14 billion in humanitarian and defensive aid for ukraine. and part of what he's going to be doing today is spelling out what an initial tranche of another $800 million will do, providing more anti-air and defe

joining us now from lviv, gabe gutierrez and molly hunter.e, you have been talking to families hiding out and trying to take shelter from the con conflict conflict, what's going through their minds? >> reporter: hi there, jose, less refugees are coming to lviv because they are heading to other cities. certainly jose a lot of concerns about the airstrike that just happened over night, the mayor saying one person was injured in that air strike in the facility near the airport. the airplane repair facility, the mayor says that six missiles were shot but ukrainian defenses shoot for of them and still two missiles destroyed the airplane facility and one person injured. i spoke with the mayor a short time ago. he said there was no purpose for that air strike other than destruction. i asked what secretary of state blinken yesterday warning russia will likely target local mayors throughout the country and kidnap them and replace them with puppets. take a look at what the mayor of lviv had to say. >> i am optimist. >> reporter: do you fear for your li

let's turn to gabe gutierrez who's live in lviv good morning what can we expect from these talks? >> reporter: good morning, frances. while it's hard to see any major breakthrough happening as a result of these thank yous, over the last few days, ukrainian officials in the east have suggested there may be some room for compromise, but overnight president zelenskyy here reiterated the harder line he has taken before that ukraine will not compromise on its territorial sovereignty. of course, russia, you know, years ago -- back in 2014 annexed the crimea area and then also has been intensely fighting for areas in the donbas region controlled by russian separatists. there have been some analysts who wondered could the country be carved up, with some parts going to russia or at least being independent from ukraine but overnight president zelenskyy said that is a nonstarter it will be interesting to see where the talks if any this week in turkey go. >> gabe, we're also watching the humanitarian crisis in mariupol continuing to stay dire. what can you tell us about the evacuation efforts

civilians, gabe, where you are on the ground in this country paying the price for this conflict. what are you seeing? >> reporter: that's right, jose. as you mentioned earlier, the ukrainian military making significant gains in and around kyiv, fighting back against the russian troops there. also in the eastern and southern part of the country they have destroyed a russian supply ship, ukrainian authorities say, and also set fire to the major ukrainian port that's under russian control at this point. right now some of the heaviest fighting remains in the besieged city of mariupol which has about 100,000 people still in there. ukrainian authorities say thousands of people have been killed. just this morning, jose, we spoke with a family from mariupol that was in lviv catching a bus to the czech republic. they say they barely escaped that city. they had been inside a basement for several weeks. it's the type of story we've been hearing over and over again. this family shared with me some video of the explosions that they heard. this is a mother and her 7-year-old son essentially ru

joining us now, nbc news correspondent gabe gutierrez in ukraine. gabe, good to see you.we've been discussing, moscow is promising to reduce military activity in northern ukraine, that includes around the capital of kyiv. but what are you seeing on the ground, people that we've talked to there. as you know, the attacks persist in several cities overnight and this morning. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, jonathan. good morning, as you mentioned ukrainian officials very skeptical of moscow's claims i should point out as you hear next to me, air raid sirens are going off once again in lviv, western ukraine. they've been going off several times a day, really for weeks now, but we have noticed they have become more common in the last few days. especially following the air strikes over the weekend when president biden visited poland. what you said, jonathan, it's correct, even though moscow is saying it's taking back some troops from kyiv and the cit of chernihiv. and the city of kharkiv, where there is constant shelling there. and local officials are calling it a humanitarian

. >> now to nbc's gabe gutierrez who was onviv with more. good morning >> reporter: vinita and frances, good morning those concessions by the russians during the peace talks yesterday were met with widespread skepticism around the world. the russians saying they would drastically reduce military action in and around kyiv as well as the northern city of chernihiv, and the ukrainians meanwhile saying they would consider giving up their nato ambitions and being a neutral nation, but this would all have to go before a referendum before the ukrainian people and that could take some time still that concession by the russians has been seen widely by military analysts as potentially being a way to reposition the country's troops as well as refuel after all their attempts to take the capital have been largely unsuccessful, and now the fighting continues in the southern and eastern parts of the country. in ckharkiv, in the northeast of ukraine heavy shelling continues. and in mariupol more than 160,000 residents remain in that city overnight president

gabe, what you can tell us about russia's assault on lviv and new reports a u.s. aircraft crashed overnight during a nato examiner in norway? >> reporter: good morning, vanita. more than a day ago where this russian attack and air strike at an airplane repair facility near lviv's airport raised a lot of eyebrows that russia's assault was expanding to include more of western ukraine, 40 miles from the polish border, from the nato border essentially. one person was injured in that attack and, but since then there's not been a major attack on lviv. a short time ago we heard air sirens, long considered a safe haven. another reminder this is a country at war. you mentioned this nato exercise, that happened yesterday. there were four servicemembers on board an aircraft conducting a cold weather exercise in norway, and when it went missing, it was supposed to land at 6:00 p.m., it was reported missing at 6:30, we have since been told the aircraft has been located, though the status of it and the four servicemembers on board the aircraft is unclear at this point. we shoul

gabe, welcome, i believe that jacob said there were three explosions. whether that was determined by three missiles or whether it could have been explosion, one leads to the next, given the volatility of a fuel tanker, we don't know yet, but can you pinpoint about how far this is from the central part of lviv, how far this explosion is? >> alex, it's just a few miles. as you mentioned, as jacob was discussing, northeast of the city center, and i want to give you some perspective as to where i am. i'm closer to the city center. if we zoom in, you see really how close this is, and how much you can still see this ominous black smoke rising in the distance. alex, according to a local official in lviv. there were actually two missile strikes, and at least five people have been injured. again, that's according to a local official, the head of the lviv regional state administration. they say that at least five people have been injured after two missile strikes in lviv. so you're seeing those live pictures with that ominous black smoke still rising above the ci
