this is what it looks like on interstate 80 at donner summit. right now completely covered in fresh snow. chain controls in effect along interstate 80 and highway 50 caltrans. no warning people to avoid heading up until after the storm. hundreds of officers patrolling the roads right now to help keep drivers safe. >> if we are not getting any calls, we are constantly driving this freeway. and when we see a person stuck, we assist them. i have had luggage packed in this patrol car and people stuffed in here. we get them off the hill. we get them to safety. >> the heavy snow and strong winds can cause an avalanche. that is forcing ski resorts to close. this is video from palisades. 17 inches of snow. by the end of the storm, they could see over 100 inches of fresh powder. palisades and alpine are closed for the day. kirkwood off the -- also announced they are closing. not all resorts are shutting down. emily ski resort is staying open at least for now. they were busy today. spotted a line of cars and people hitting the slopes. let's check right in

donner pass, echo summit. they all fall within that purple extreme. think the word has gotten out on this. this is an extreme situation. i-80 is closed and travel is impossible, which is why we saw kelsi earlier and she's just hanging out in the parking lot in truckee. it is cold enough, as we saw from john ramos' story earlier, we have gotten light snow on mount hamilton. what he showed us melted but there will be more. it's more impactful to our north. so mount saint helena in the north bay will get maybe five to six inches. look at clear lake. this becomes a bigger deal. there's a winter storm warning through lake and mendocino county. and a lot of these communities now which aren't used to deal with -- inif it's just an inch or two, clear lake, willis, ukiah, that's through mendocino and lake county. if you look at the big picture, that's clearly the real story on snow from a far more impactful side. we know the blizzard warning stays in effect until 10:00 in the morning. i'll watch the snow that's still to go. this is why i jokingly said kelsi wa

let's take it right up to where those drivers are stranded right at donner summit.e have a wind chill of 13 degrees right now. that is an elevation of 7239, winter overall in the area, 25- 50, gust currently at the ridge tops looking at 100+ miles per hour. so, i'm sure chp and all of the emergency crews that are in place are, you know, monitoring this and figuring out if they need to go in and get people out and how they would do it, because we are still looking at quite a bit of snowfall here over the next 24 hours. this, as the snow totals as we head into tomorrow, 39 tahoe, 45 in kirkwood comments know that could go down as low as plaster ville and right there at colfax, and more gusty winds 60-100 miles per hour. by sunday, not quite as much snow in a 24-hour period, but still looking at what could be six, seven, eight, eight inches of snow for a lot of the locations. king bill, maybe another 12 inches. back here in the bay area, different scenario here. scatterbrained showing up on the doppler radar, some thunderstorms and heavier pockets moving off towards th

donner summit, 9-12 feet adding up over the next 72 hours or so. highway 50, similar story, up in elevation, the numbers just continue to pinwheel up. talking 6-9 feet by the time you get to echo summit. a little less around meyers and south lake tahoe. 4-7 feet adding up. this is the rainmaker, the first batch to moderate to heavy rainfall pushing to the east. not going to last long enough to lead to flooding concerns and the follow up waves of rain will be mostly light to moderate rain. the breaks and the light to moderate rain keeping a lid on the widespread flooding potential. we will keep a look out for localized issues but not a likely scenario the way things are shaping up. heading through the weekend, well, the end of the workweek and then the weekend, tracking an area of slightly heavier rain moving through tomorrow evening and night that is associated with the cold front associated with the storm system. but, even once that moves through the rain does not shut off. the snow does not shut off in the sierra. we will see off and on, light to

this is the current view from the caltrans camera at donner summit. you can see the flashing lights of a tow truck trying to move some kind of obstruction out of the way. this is the time when my newsroom application shuts down and blocks the view exactly of that. let's look at first alert doppler over the last few hours, the intense snowfall indicated by blue. that's the kind of snow continuing through this evening and most of the night. this is the point at which we'll add up snow at the fastest rate between now and 11:00, at least a foot, some places close to 2 feet of snow heading up near the donner summit. through the rest of tonight, a couple more feet of accumulation. going through the day tomorrow, there will still be bursts of heavy snow, especially late in the day. it continues to pile up, another 6 to 8 feet on top of what's already accumulated for some of the higher peaks and at lake level another at least 3 feet of snow is likely, plus the winds gusting over 100 miles an hour, exceptionally dangerous situation in the mountains. let's look

this is the live picture from caltrans at donner summit. traffic has essentially parked and the camera is being shaken by the gusty winds. this was the concern, that things would become essentially impassable in the sierra and now some of the most intense snow and wind will kick in and continue at least the next 12 hours, maybe 18 or so. here's the doppler loop the past few years in the sierra. you can see the snow line advancing downslope towards the end of the sequence, indicating cold air is pushing snow levels down in elevation to about 3,000 feet or so, down to about 2,000 feet later tonight. let's up the snow and how long it lasts. just over the next six hours or so, another foot to 2 feet of snow on top of some of the peaks, 3 to 5 inches per hour, and they'll add up to several feet of snow in the higher elevations by the time the sun comes up tomorrow morning. it will continue throughout the day tomorrow and tomorrow night even though it starts to taper off early sunday morning. on top of what has already fallen, over 6 feet of addi

interstate 80 is open over donner summit. cal trans has been stopping travelers heading east bound since friday night because of the massive snowstorm. the interstate is open to passenger vehicles and big rigs are being held. >>> in the bay area we have a break in the rain after a wet windy weekend but the cold temperatures are going to stick around. jessica burch gives us a sneak peek. >>> over the weekend, sierra saw heavy snow fall totals. in the bay we got our fair share of rain from the same cold front that moved in from offshore. we got close to an inch in san jose, passed an inch in half moon bay and san francisco and passed two inches into novato where head lands got hit with some of the heaviest rain so far. as we look at the next days, today, tomorrow, into our wednesday, we will continue to see unsettled weather. what does that mean? if we look at futurecast, light speckles of showers moving in at times with dense clouds from offshore. we will watch that be the case into our tuesday forecast mostly in the north bay

, late tonight and early tuesday, like half a foot of snow on donner pass.y well conditioned after the significance of the storm that came through here last week to think, that is nothing a we just got eight feet. what problem is have a foot? half a foot is a problem if you have to drive in it. the national weather service has issued a winter storm watch . for the time frame from sunday night through tuesday at noon. if you have to travel in the sierra, be very aware. there will be delays and you will need chains through that window. once we finish with those two systems, we do a 180 because the real headline in this forecast is the warm-up for next weekend. if you look at the climate prediction center's probability map, the deeper shade of orange in which we fall, shows you a relatively high degree of confidence the temperatures are going to be above average. we see it here will we look at the temperature anomaly map going from below average today to warming above average. we will put it in the seven-day forecast. san francisco in oakland, 72 degree day in

both of them combined are going to put down half a foot of new snow on donners pass. we wake up with 9 inches of snow up in donners pass and that is nothing compared to the last storm. that is still enough to mess with the drive that will go from tonight at 10:00. doesn't expire until tuesday, taking into account both of those storms. if you have to travel in the sierra, heads up. chains will be needed. and they will be able to keep it open, likely delays at times up there and the chains will slow you down. we're watching the two systems pass. here is one thing that will happen after the second one leaves. notice how that storm moves east? watch the wind feel. as the second storm on monday leaves. on the back edge of it, something very spring like is going to develop. offshore winds. see the wind streams on here? look at the colors brighten up here. it won't be a terribly windy day. but watch what happens, you're going to drop. we're not in fire season yet. i think this is one point in the year where we could say there are not too many times here where you could say t

this is from i-80 at donner lake road.e've lost some of the feeds from the cameras at the highest elevations, including donner pass. but you can see i-80 is just deserted, the snow whipping past the camera lens. the wind gust exceptional with this storm system. the the blizzard warning continues through 10:00 a.m. sunday. wind gusts over 100 miles per hour. the strongest gusts so far, one of the peaks above palisades tahoe, 190 miles per hour. right now we have rain scatter across the bay area. not as widespread or heavy, but still locally heavy over the bay and extending into the east bay over the oakland hills into the neighborhood of danville. we have more showers in the north bay as well. little lighter. that's going to be the kind of activity that takes over. more heavy downpours, including some moving through the santa cruz mountains. the whiteout lines indicate some urban and small stream flooding warnings, but those will be allowed to expire. some gusty winds out there, but not as strong as earlier, so things trend

this is what things look like at donner summit, right near kings beach. officers close to the california nevada border have been helping drivers who are trying to beat the blizzard conditions. if you're planning on heading that way before the weekend is over, the chp says don't. >> the road is closed at this point, or they're holding traffic. uh- caltrans is trying the best they can. uh, we have zero visibility up here on the summit to get over, uh, into nevada or from nevada, over into california. for now, chain controls are also required. >> and if you're traveling on highway 50, the blizzard warning issued by the national weather service. has been extended a.m. on monday. all right, here's another reason not to drive there. this is what it looks like for people who live in truckee. video overnight shows those whipping winds blowing snow all over the place as the snow continues to pile up this morning, people who are from the bay area. but in the sierra right now are hunkering down and waiting to get home. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke.

shattered glass windows before the cameras shut down, knocked offline on the donner summit. this was the scene friday and 05:00pm when the chp closed it all down, it remained shuttered saturday sunday and until monday morning at 9.15, due to unsafe wild winter conditions. you could still see the shenanigans. you could still see that people were just adhering to the warnings. and, you know, if you did not need to be on the road, there was no reason to be on the road. several cars and big rigs had to be towed off 80 and highway 50. >> both are now open, but it is still slow going in areas. emerald bay, which is highway 89 in the west shores still close. those are areas that just get. >> inundated with snow. so unfortunately, those are going to take a little bit more time to clean in first 3 days of march. that's almost 3rd of the snowfall that we have received this season. so >> we've got a lot of digging to do have are going to get out for a little ran vp and general manager of northstar california says that they were able to welcome guests monday after the mammoth snowfall.

this is the view of donner summit. this is a little bit of traffic trying to sneak through. we are seeing the snow become more intense. you can see there is more heavy snow making its way up i-80 as we speak and it will continue like this through this evening and into tonight. futurecast with the snowball accumulation announce -- amounts on top of it shows that between now and 11:00 this evening, we could be adding up to a foot of snow in the highest elevations with close to a foot of snow at lake level just over the course of the next eight hours and then there is more on top of that. most intense snowball will be from now until tomorrow morning but there will be plenty more snow adding up through the day on saturday. finally, starting to taper off a little bit by sunday morning but the blizzard warning does not expire until 10:00 a.m. on sunday. we will have an additional 7 feet of snow at donner summit and lake level, another 3.5 feet of snow on top of what has accumulated. we have our own winter storm warning closer to home. this is in effect through 10:00 a.m. on saturd

this did block all of the lanes at the donner lake interchange but it was cleared at 12:00. chains are currently required and chp is highly discouraging any nonessential travel up to the mountains. >> for us here locally, likely you notice the wind is kicking up in addition to the decrease in temperature so let's look at your microclimate forecast. we already see rain. this is on the radar if you zoom this one in a little closer you can see moving in through parts of the north bay and san francisco. mostly light to moderate so the intensity here is not heavy zooming it further south you can see through san jose there will be some rain moving in and then out closer to the sierra is the greatest impact. the winter blast going into friday you will see the main cold front moving through where the wind will continue to kick up into friday morning. eventually it will diminish into friday night but because of the cold air blast we could be seeing the low snow elevations in the cold air that will certainly bring the possibility of seeing snow on the peaks. in addition to the sierra

interstate 80 remains closed in both directions over donner summit. the chp urging motorists to wait until conditions improve before they even try to get to tahoe. could be several days before streets and highway off ramps in the tahoe area are plowed. for cars and trucks. so much snow there. cornell, bernard abc seven news. a lot of work for those people that have to dig out. >> thanks, cornell. the storm left behind a mess at san francisco national cemetery in the presidio, a 50 foot eucalyptus tree fell onto several gravesites earlier today. it also landed on a water main, causing it to break a tree, trimming company and san francisco firefighters are on scene cleaning up the damage. the string of storms is also dropping hail. we've heard reports from placer county all the way down to the bay, and this was the scene in contra costa county this morning. a family in el sobrante woke up to a layer of hail in their yard and on top of their cars, which it can do damage you're hearing it and looking at hail. just pounding down in the peninsula. this vide

i mean, heavy snowfall is falling currently anywhere from donner over into echo summit and stretching down into kirkwood and everywhere in-between. back here in the bay of course we're at a lower level and so we're getting a whole bunch of rain from this exact same system and on and off showers currently in the forecast right now but the other thing to mention too. we've been talking a lot about the wind gusts up in the sierra, already seen a reported 145-mile-per-hour wind peak or wind gust at the peak of palisades. but back here in the bay, we're going to be dealing with some gusty conditions too heading into the next couple of hours and through the afternoon. 9:00, about 25-mile-per-hour winds off into the east bay. all the way into the lunchtime forecast, it's starting to get gustier along the coast up to 30 to 35 miles per hour. we continue to watch the gusty witness in the evening hours tonight and matched with some rain and that snow up in the sierra. we'll have more on that in a bit. for now over to you, g. >>> thank you. let's talk about the roadways right now and i want to t

this is the live view from the cdot camera on donner summit on i-80. chain controls are definitely in effect. conditions are bad and getting worse. the camera has been shaking around. i've been watching people try to pass each other even through this absolutely dreadful travel conditions now and it's going to get worse over the next several days. look at the snow profile as we look at i-80 from today through sunday. you get above one mile in elevation, blue canyon at 5,300 feet, 5 to 8 feet of snow, up to 9 to 12 plus feet at donner summit by the time everything is added up. it doesn't mean it's going to be a 12-foot tunnel of snow to plow through. it gets compacted down, but that's a ton of snow. highway 50 a similar story. get above one mile in elevation and we're talking about 5 to 10 total feet of snowfall. this is a rainmaker around the bay area, same system responsible for both, rain with gusty winds arriving today. the winds will be strongest tomorrow and the storm system lingers heading into the weekend, leftover showers sunday even though that
