harris is heading to grand rapids, lansing, in oakland county, which is a suburb of detroit. donald trump is going to be an oakland county as well. i don't think there happy. there's going to be a joint appearance this will be the first time that he's heading back to rally there since he was in detroit and trash detroit. do you think that should be his message to this time around? >> oh, look, i think his message ought to be that under republican governance whether that's at the white house level or at the u.s. senate level where we have a big race going on in michigan, you're going to do better and that was this message when he was at the detroit economic club before, but he said he trash detroit. he did though it no one can deny the decades of decline in detroit and he's asking them to try something different and i know a lot of people in detroit one thing they will say, you don't know when he's you used to because as many people live there and, you know, stop but the detroit as i will be there and i will be there in a few weeks detroit is doing very well. >> detroit is com

you were at the harris event in grand rapids. what was the energy like in that space? >> it was very similar to when i covered her first appearance first full day appearance, and he went with governor walz at the airport very diverse, very large crowd, very energetic crowd. and when i say diverse, i'm not just speaking in terms of race, i mean generationally diverse i mean gender representation diverse. i'm talking about unions and non-unions able body of people in wheelchairs. i need really a kaleidoscope of america showed up today in grand rapids, and it just reminded me laura of what i saw in detroit when she first announced with our tim walz, had you seen any lapse of enthusiasm since then? obviously, we're talking about the kamala mentum at that point. was there a significant downgrade now, these days before the election if there was it didn't make it wayne, in michigan? >> i can tell you that it took me hours to get out in large part because people wouldn't leave even after the vice president had lauft, there was like a carnival sort of event at this particular c

i've just been in the western part of michigan in grand rapids, which is a reasonably conservative parttate and yeah, you can find plenty of donald trump voter but they're much more ambivalent. the phrase lesser of two evils was used to me on a much more regular basis so donald trump's support is there but it's less enthusiastic and particular on the economic issues, people are very angry about the way their wages have been eroded, way prices have gone up over the last few years. average michigan voter is paying about $150 a month more for their groceries than they were four years ago. what inflation is now down to 2.5%, just under that, the prices are still rising, albeit more slowly and the rises have happened are baked in so they're pretty unhappy about that and then you put on top of that gas prices in this famously all the active state and on top of that, the rising housing costs, which are huge across the country, particularly bad here in michigan for mornings and rent and this is a sort of source of resentment that is not easy to erase for the democrats. >> interesting reporting

before that, the vice president spoke at a rally in grand rapids.ininan protesters gathered at the venue. the war in gaza is a key issue for voters in michigan, which has the largest proportion of arab—americans in the us. i've been speaking with the political editor of michigan public radio, zoe clark, about the busy day of campaigning in the state. yes, it's been fascinating to watch. i can tell you, i don't remember a day like this in presidential politics here in michigan for a very long time. look, both candidates are talking about manufacturing, they are talking about union jobs, on certain issues light on immigration and abortion. it really felt like today it was about the economy, it was about inflation, what kind of life and what kind of world either candidate would bring the michigan voters into the future. so, of course, michigan, as we know, one of the seven battle ground states in this election. just tell us more about the importance, of course, of michigan in this race, but also the kind of voters that both candidates have been targeti
