i'm gia vang. a man stopped for selling suspected fentanyl has led to an even bigger bust by san jose police. we're talking thousands of dollars worth of illegal guns and drugs that police say he was selling across the bay area. nbc bay area's marianne favro is in san jose, with the developments. as part of their investigation, the san jose police department's street crimes unit obtained a search warrant for a home in stockton, and that's where they found a large amount of illegal guns and narcotics. san jose police say on december 3rd, they intercepted a suspected fentanyl sale here off coddle road and arrested justin dixon for supplying illegal narcoti for sale. but the investigation didn't end there. the street crimes unit obtained a search warrant for dixon's home in stockton, and this is what they found inside. illegal guns, including an assault rifle. the seizure that we made at the residence in stockton that was associated with the suspect was immense. i mean, not only were we able to find r

i'm terry mcsweeney, and i'm gia vang. oakland's budget woes officially coming to a head come tomorrow, two fire stations in the oakland hills will be closing to help with the city's nearly $130 million budget deficit. it's slated to be a temporary closure only six months. but as neighbors tell nbc bay area's alyssa goard, they're worried even a short term closure could spell danger for their families. in oakland's grass valley neighborhood, more than a dozen neighbors tell us they were blindsided by the announcement friday that their local fire station would be temporarily closed starting tomorrow. and i can say this station has been her ever since i went to grass valley elementary school, and when my grandmother had a heart attack in 2014, this station was the first to respond. don't close any fire stations. but this. this shouldn't be one of the first stations you close. station 28 will be closed for six months as part of the contingency budget adopted by oakland city council to help address a $129 million budget defici

nbc's gia vang reports from oakland.his out of control crime wave signs in hand for a number of oaklanders who want the city's police pursuit policy to change. it has to be chasing to get the consequences done. we need to send a message across the bay area that you cannot come here to oakland for crime, tourism and no chase. to be clear, the city has a pursuit policy. don't be misled by these wahab which others tried to make clear to this group. but the issue has become front and center again because of the ultimatum governor gavin newsom gave to the police commission. we need to see that policy changed. widen the policy or he would take away additional chp help. that has been unfair and has been misguided. and what we hope today is to not pass the buck is to not make excuses, because, according to chair garcia acosta, the body makes recommendations to the chief, who has already signaled he wants to expand the language. the two main sticking points. officers can only chase if the person committed a violent forcible crime

gia vang. nbc bay area news. well, she just left congressast week, but barbara lee isn't done with politics. apparently, the former congresswoman announced today that she is officially running for mayor of oakland. lee broke that news in a video message this morning. it follows weeks of speculation and a public push from other city and community leaders. 78 year old, no stranger to the town, she's been on oakland ballots for three decades, having first been electeto the state legislature in 1990. and she's represented oakland for close to 30 years in the house. this is really important in terms of trying to bring people together, because so many people i've talked to, labor, business, community activists, i've talked to members of the clergy, and the same issues keep coming up. and so i said, well, let's do this. and i'm very excited. now, lee is facing more than a dozen other potential candidates. oakland voters will ultimately decide who their next mayor will be in a special election on april 15th. we're back i

nbc's gia vang sat down with his great grandson in brentwood. in san francisco chinatown. there's a mural on grant and jackson. one of the faces is wong kim ark. he was born on the 700 block of sacramento street in 1870. but why there's a mural depicting him is one of american history. that's the only picture i've ever seen of him. i know this is a descendant of his. norman wong. i'm glad he stood up. a lot of people have feelings about stuff, but they're not willing to stick their neck out. in 1898, norman's great grandfather wong successfully defended his claim he was a u.s. citizen in the supreme court. officials were denying wong reentry back from china during a wave of anti-asian sentiment in the country, saying his parents were chinese nationals at the time of his birth. but they were in the u.s. legally. so. wong's win reaffirmed the 14th amendment that anyone born in the u.s. is automatically a citizen. his story was thrust back into the national spotlight. this next order relates to the definition of birthright citizenship under the 14th amendment of the united st

bigad and gia. now, police are just wrapping up their investigation here, though the intersection is still blocked here at acton and russell in southwest berkeley. berkeley police tell me that there is no ongoing threat to the public, so no immediate concern for neighbors here. however, this is something that police are actively investigating. they say this all began just after noon today, when they got a call from this area about a stolen vehicle. but then they had to pivot when they also started getting calls about people on the ground bleeding in the same spo when police arrived, they found three people who had been stabbed two women or excuse me, t men and one woman. all three of those people were taken to the hospital. the woman ultimately died of her injuries and the two men, however, survived and police say they are in stable condition now. police have not shared the identities of those three people. they also have not said how those people are connected to each other, or what happened with t

i'm gia vang. okay.e these deadly firestorms broke out in southern california, the wildfires that caused one of the worst disasters in u.s. history are closer to being completely out. the palisades fires more than 80% contained after burning over 36mi■!s, an area nearly the size of san francisco. evacuation orders are still in place for many neighborhoods over concerns that strong rain this weekend could trigger mudslides in the burn scar, and there are similar concerns for neighborhoods near the eaton fire. the wildfire erupted near pasadena. it's now almost completely contained. cal fire has transitioned command of the incident back to l.a. county fire department. that's a good sign of the progress being made there. across both fires, there are at least 28 known deaths, many tied to the eaton fire after it burned through altadena. more than 16,000 structures have been destroyed, and tens of thousands of people still waiting for evacuation orders to be lifted. they didn't have enough water. that is the
