this is a snowmaker in the sierra. let's look how that adds up.ll track the winter storm warning in the higher elevations with a winter weather advisory in effect at lake level. that's going to pick up 5 to 7 inches of snow. higher up they'll pick up 10 to 15 inches of snow. we're talking about winds gusting up to about 50 miles an hour. that's enough to move you around on the roads, treacherous travel conditions tomorrow on both u.s. 50 and i-80, travel strongly discouraged. push that back until saturday. the weekend is looking fine to get up to the ski resorts. the rain chances go down to essentially nothing through the rest of the seven-day forecast. likely rain tomorrow for the entire bay area, modest, but still counts. then we get into an extended dry break through the rest of the seven-day forecast and even beyond that, the two-week outlook points to a good chance of dry conditions till mid-january. we'll keep an eye on that. in the short term let's look at the seven-day forecast and after tomorrow, no more rain, but we do have warmth settli

the snow survey in the sierra. you can see the breakdown for the north to the central portions of the sierra and the southern sierra. so clearly, all those atmospheric rivers really having an impact on northern californians, translating to these numbers as well. statewide average 108% of average. and we will continue to build the snowpack as we do move into friday. here is a look at the projections here. and snow levels actually coming down to possibly 5000 to 5500ft. and a winter storm warning begins tomorrow morning, 7 a.m, running until 10:00 tomorrow night. and snowfall could be around six to possibly 12in. so this will be a winter storm warning for the west slopes of the sierra. closer to lake tahoe is. it is a winter weather advisory that's setting up with this pattern over the next few days. now, in terms of the rain showers here in the bay area, we are expecting things to pick up overnight. here's a look at the satellite, where you can see some green showing up in northern california, right around eureka, r

sierra at 94% or southern sierra. at 75% of that happens because a lot of these storms that are coming from the pacific northwest just don't make it that far south. however, having said that, we are gonna get a little more snow as we roll into the weekend. so 48 degrees right now in tahoe. pretty calm out there. this is where we have our our winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings are going up starting at 07:00am on friday till 10:00pm and fridays. that's when you don't want to be on the roads. that's when some snow be falling. it's not gonna be a whole lot. we're talking 2 to 5 inches above about 5,000 feet, up to 12 inches up at the peaks. and of course, we're gonna have some gusty wind with that as well. so showing you this, we can see where the rain starts to come in in the morning here in the bay area. and then the snow starts to pick up, especially in the afternoon as we get into the sierra. that's when they're going to be under that warning and the advisory and then it clears out rather quickly. so

by the time it gets his way up in the sierra nevada. you're talking that snow level dropping down to about 5500 feet. so winter storm warnings on the western of the sierra nevada. that means all the passes. if you're driving over 15, 80, yeah, going to be some issues tomorrow. maybe some delays up there expect that as you head throughout the day, that storm system going to be ramping up starting in the morning. but getting going really through the middle of the day in the afternoon. that winter storm warning in effect from 07:00am until 10 o'clock tomorrow night. by the time we had all things up, probably another foot of snow the higher peaks there. so that' some good news. but really the focus of the storms this season so far, really northern california, really a north bay onward. you've seen tremendous amounts of rain and a lot of snow 161% of normal in the northern sierra nevada just a little bit below average in the central. then you get to the southern. i'm actually surprised even have as much as they do. 75% of normal in the south

yeah, it's really coming down across the sierra nevada right now. you can see just kind of piling up as we went through the day, going public, see upwards of a foot of snow across some of the higher peaks. that snow level dropping all the way down to about 5500 feet. so here's where we sit right now. you see all the snow around the tahoe area and thaaffts all the roads up there. 50 and 80 and of course, boy, just tough getting up there in these kind of conditions. i would definitely wait another day if you can, and then looks like things will begin to clear out. then you'll be able to enjoy the drive up there and enjoy all that fresh powder up in the sierra. 31 degrees right now in south lake tone freezing. 38 incline is currently 30 degrees in holmen and 32 degrees at truckee are expecting a more of that snow to continue. although things will begin to taper off a little bit later on tonight. we're still watching that front dragging through much of the sierra nevada right now. turning more towards scattered showers and that'll be the case as we head

and we're even seeing some breaks in the clouds for the sierra.t is going to continue into the late night to evening hours, and we do expect again the winter travel advisories to last into the evening hours as well. here's a look at some of the accumulation between now and the end of a friday into midnight. anywhere from 6 to 9in even 12in will be a possibility. some of the highest peaks are likely to pick up a foot to a foot and a half. snowing right now, right around blue canyon, south lake tahoe and truckee with temperatures right near freezing. getting into the weekend, the snow and the wind is expected to pull away and we will be left with partly cloudy, cold conditions for the afternoons in the 40s. overnight lows will be in the 20s. meanwhile, for us here at home, the timing on this once again, if you are just joining us, you notice we do actually have a plenty of clear sky and even some sunshine before the sun sets. but about 7:00 or so another wave is moving through. if you have evening plans, dinner plans, this could catch you off guard.

that extends to the east into the central valley and the sierra as well.ing to get some snow for the first time in the last several weeks. let's take a look at futurecast as we go through the weekend in the sierra. the first wave of very light snow isn't going to be much more than a few flurries friday night. but the actual accumulating snow is going to hit the ground around midday on saturday. it's going to add up to the tune of a couple inches at lake level and 3 to 6 inches of snow on top of some of the peaks. if you're heading in that direction, get some fresh powder, goods news. bad news is travel condition on the way back on u.s. 50 and i-80 might be tricky by sundays afternoon. then things should be coming to an end by sunday night. it's not the only chance of precipitation, snow in the sierra, rain here, that we have in the extended forecast. there's another chance, a one in three chance, headed our way by thursday of next week. but it is just nice to at least see some typical january rain chances trying to head our way, even if they're not overly

this sierra a few inches of snowfall. again, this is later in the day saturday, saturday night into sunday. this low traverses a little bit further southward in sunday. looking like a day that will bring some much needed rain and much more significant rain in the bay area will get for southern california. we will continue to see those snow showers up in the sierra for your sunday to some needed snow up there. all in all even into monday could be some lingering southern california showers. the bay area long dry at that point. how much rain are we looking at here will get a close look at these numbers on the map as we get a little bit closer. you can see that the bay area could see nothing more than just a few light showers. more likely for areas a little further inland and a little bit further southward. the sierra those couple inches of snowfall still absolutely panning out. well, southern california, this is decent rainfall by no means really breaking this drought conditions that have evolved down in the southern part of

the sierra snowpack has been dropping constantly, mainly in the southern sierra. we're doing the worst with only about half of our normal amount. the central sierra around lake tahoe is about a 75% of its normal amount, with the highest amount in the northern sierra, and our reservoirs are still on track to do pretty well for now, but we are needing that rainfall as well as that sierra snow melt to help fill things up in the springtime. looking at our 7-day forecast, more sun at least through the end of next week, and temperatures coming down to the low 60s. but every morning it's going to be cold. starting out in the mid to upper 30s. and cynthia, you are hearing about a crash in the tri-valley. yeah. here's what we know so far over in san ramon, again by the city center, we go to southbound 680 near the bollinger canyon on ramp there. chp investigating this crash, but also saying something about speed being a factor there. one of the cars possibly involved. they're investigating that. so just be careful. otherwise traffic is flowing very well there through the r

and in the sierra. finally some snowfall. this was the scene today from the sierra tahoe.ice to see those storm clouds back in the region. not a major system, but still enough to produce this. a winter weather advisory until 4 p.m. sunday, and snowfall could be right around 2 to 6in. it looks like into. as we head toward february, we could see a pattern change will bring us a lot more rainfall and maybe a lot more snowfall in the sierra. here's a look at the satellite and radar, where you can see the circulation over the bay area. this producing the scattered rain showers and already some rain showing up in parts of southern california as well. here's a look at our radar. that rotation once again all wrapping around that area of low pressure. there's not a lot of widespread rain, but still some scattered showers showing up here closer to portions of san francisco, maybe right around the bay bridge and then parts of the south bay, especially closer to the gilroy area, and also the santa cruz mountains. outside right now we'll show you some of the current numbers out there.

that means rain in the sierra. we are talking about some snow finally, and the extended outlook into early next week. we are tracking unsettled conditions, with rain continuing for much of the latter half of the seven day. this morning, the headlines all about the cold start. 30s for a lot of us right now. we do expect sunny skies throughout the day. dry conditions and temperatures this afternoon pretty close to average. so after that cold start in the 30s will bounce back just like we did yesterday. we'll have sunshine upper 50s to the lower 60s. that sunshine will feel nice later on this afternoon. now, overnight tonight, we are tracking a return of our marine layer clouds. so depending on how extensive they become, they may limit how cold we get because clouds in the winter time, it acts like a blanket. it insulates us and that would prevent us from getting too chilly. but nonetheless, we'll likely have another round of frost advisories and freeze warnings for parts of the region heading into tomorrow morning. l
