this will take some time to play out, and we'll have to see what effect it ultimately has in the south bay. ian cull nbc bay area news. a live look tonight at the bay bridge. it looks the same as it did yesterday, but now it costs more to cross. the bridge is one of seven state owned bridges where bay area bridges, where you'll have to shell out a dollar more to cross. so tolls for regular cars, that's now $8. the increase was part of a measure approved by voters, and that will include support for transit and highway improvements. the toll change does not include the golden gate bridge. bart and muni fares are also going up by about $0.25, depending on your route. so how do riders feel about it? i think that i don't like it when fares increase, but it seems like it's kind of a necessity in these days with inflation. bart says the increase is meant to help keep pace with inflation, and also support operations to move toward restoring financial stability. muni says its changes were tied to public feedback received earlier this year during the budget process. okay. bay area high school marchi

you can see that this distralts right east bay and south bay, parts of the east bay and south bay are in what's called abnormally dry conditions. so we could certainly use some more rain there. having said that after this next system. and i do think we'll get some in the east bay in the south bay from this and a little bit of snow in the sierra. but after this, that ridge is going to keep everything going right over the top of us heading into the pacific northwest and skirting the bay-area altogether. so in general, we're starting our new year. pretty quiet right? and certainly today with the blue skies out there. pretty lovely as we take a look at temperatures above average in a few spots today to you can see those 60's right now in napa and santa rosa. 65 though, in san jose, south bay, israeli overperforming wind is relatively calm so far today. and we've seen a little bit of an offshore flow. we are going to see a little bit of a breeze as the system goes through. so that will be part of the forecast as we see a little bit of rain tomorrow morning into the afternoon. but after tha

turf wars in the south bay. we are talking about the battle over artificial turf in santa clara county. the board of supervisors just decided whether to ban plastic turf on county owned property. nbc bay area's marianne favro is live in san jose. with this latest development that just came down, mary ann. janelle. there were actually two different versions of this proposed turf ban, but just a few minutes ago, the supervisors voted against both of them. still, this was a hot topic with more than 120 people from the community weighing in this afternoon both for and against. now the fight is between those who feel that chemicals in the artificial turf are potentially dangerous, and turf supporters who believe time has shown that the grass substitute is safe and is the only way to provide safe fields for kids and competitions. it's not like we don't want sports fields. we know that they're important, but we just don't want to be poisoning the environment and the kids. it's their future. i'm very concerned that we a

and with it comes the possibility of sweeps of encampments in the south bay. y in the bay's joe bob redell joins us from an area close to coyote creek in san jose. and bob, many say they don't know where they're going to go. unfortunately, that is an issue for people who live in these encampments, like the one behind me. good morning to you, scott and laura. starting today, the santa clara valley water district can begin enforcing a law that bans camping on valley water land. like the area behind me here where obviously it's dark out, but coyote creeks behind me down the embankment. there are some. there's a tent there or some other encampments behind me. we're just off story road here in san jose. the city of san jose has said these encampments are spilling waste into local waterways, including coyote creek, and they need to go. the encampments need to go in order for the city to be in compliance with the clean water act. a spokesman for valley water says the district is right now not planning to remove any unhoused people by force from the banks of its waterw

absolutely nothing in the south bay. so what? we're just going to be watching extremely closely every day is if that rain line moves a little bit more to the south, our totals would go up exponentially. and i can show you that here friday through sunday, off to the north, riding close to four inches over four inches in eureka. that's where we could have the threat of some flooding. we need every single drop we can get. you can see a rain deficit here through most of the bay area, except for the north bay. on that 7-day forecast right here in san francisco. i've put that spotty chance of rain friday, saturday, sunday and monday. and the same thing here across the inland valleys. it would be good if we got this to move a little bit closer towards us, you know, and we could avoid flooding. so we'll see what happens in the coming days. again, some very important developments we expect through t the next three days. l right. not too low. not too far high. just in the middle. yeah. we need that goldilocks forecast. okay. thanks, jeff.

another big concern tonight is coming from businesses in the south bay. some are worried they will start having trouble finding enough workers to stay afloat. nbc bay area's marianne favro is live in san jose with what they're up against. marianne, the concern is that some employees will not show up to work because they're worried about running into ice. agents, and immigration attorneys predict that the hospitality industry, especially restaurants, will be hit the hardest. for some, the sight of ice agents sunday in an east san jose shopping center parking lot prompted immediate reactions. folks didn't want to go to work. folks couldn't get their weekly shopping done. instead of having a calm, restful sunday, folks are sent into panic, worried about their safety and the safety of their loved ones. now, some are anticipating fearful undocumented immigrants working in bay area restaurants and hotels may not show up to work. gene cohen is the executive officer with the south bay labor council. i think the fear is real, and we need to make sure that workers a

struggling to make it in the bay, and it shows many of the unhoused population is they are living in the south bay. that is the end of year assessment, which found nearly 40,000 people are without housing across the bay area. about one quarter are in the south bay across santa clara county, where the rate of homelessness is about 5% higher than one year ago. some advocates say they are not surprised. that's probably even an undercount. there's been there's a consistent number of people that continually get priced out of san jose, and they end up on the streets. there was a lot of people who ended up getting evicted after covid, after the protections ended. the south bay is not unique in having a higher rate of homelessness. in contra costa county, the rate surged by 20% compared to last year. san mateo county is up 15%, san francisco is up 10%. we are talking about this at the top of the newscast. the bay area's commercial dungeness crab season officially underway in san francisco yesterday. fans lined up to receive their share of the very first catch. this is one of the latest ever recent starts

so, 10:00 tomorrow morning in the south bay. there's a chance. you look in the afternoon and some spotty showers begin to rotate back in as we head into the 2 to 4 p.m. time period. a wind advisory goes up for the north bay mountains. right now, it's already up until 10 a.m. sunday. gusts up to 50 miles an hour could see a few outages or tree limbs going down. the other thing that's going down are the temperatures frost advisory for our inland areas. 1 to 9 a.m. tomorrow. numbers down to the low 30s and frost will form. this is going to be the first storm for southern california of this winter season, and they are going to get soaked, as you can see, not just tomorrow, but going into sunday as well. the mountains will pick up snow. the concern here, as much as it will help the firefighting efforts with higher humidity and that rain, there is potential for mudslides. so here's a sampling of some of the rainfall projections. castaic 6000/900 of an inch. altadena 6600 la. about a third and pacific palisades a little bit less than that. i'll be back
