let's get right to nbc bay area's alyssa goard, who is live near the scene. alyssa, i understand you're just about to get an update from officials about what's going on there. that's right. garvin, we are just outside of martinez refining company right now, and we actually have the podium set up right next to us. we're awaiting an update from officials. now, from where we're standing right now, we can't see the flames. but as you mentioned, we've sent back a lot of the video we've already seen of just the stunning billowing flames over here. two things to watch out for. first, there are the flames from the fire the refinery says is burning. in addition to that, there's also a flare going on too, so keep your eyes on that as well. the flames here are just enormous. you can see them from driving in from at least five miles away. there's a kind of a roar in the background as this burns almost like the ocean. contra costa county says they got a report from the refinery about this just before 2:00 this afternoon. they've sent out a health advisory for martinez and

christie smith, nbc, bay area news. well, it turns out that california has had a significant decline in its death row population in 2024. that's according to a new report released this week by the nonprofit death penalty project. the death row population drop was lower than any other state in the u.s. last year. in total, death row dreased by 63 people with no executions. 13 of those died inmates while in prison, while the rest were either resentenced due to changes in state law. one person exonerate. in the past six years, california has sentenced 20 convicted murderers to death. an average of three people a year. today, a guilty plea from a man accused of flying a drone over the palisades fire. that drone then collided with a firefighting plane. prosecutors say peter aikman launched the drone from a parking structure to survey the damage from the fire. a couple of weeks ago. that's when he lost sight of the drone. that drone collided with the wing of a super scooper aircraft. investigators hope it serves as a warning

this is nbc bay area news tonight i'm raj mathai. a pivotal few hours ahead of us. the rain is starting to move out, but the flooding will begin and the evacuations and power outages will continue. here's what we know at this hour. the strongest wave from that atmospheric river is moving out. but people in the north bay are now being told to evacuate. take a look. a mudslide in sonoma county sent this home. flooding right down the russian river. that's a home in the river. the nonstop rain causing west side road in forestville to give way. this is about the noon hour. this is a vacation home, so thankfully no one was inside. search and rescue crews were sent out as a precaution. i've never personally seen a house come off a hill out in this area before, so these are unprecedented rains that we're getting out here now. here's the bottom line as we move into the next several hours, the russian river is expected to flood by tomorrow morning. people in the low lying communities from unincorporated healdsburg to jenner have been told to evacuate. now the napa river also

parts of the bay area are already getting impacted by all this rain. nbcab joins us from santa rosa. it is really starting to come down here in santa rosa after not so much heavy rain this morning. this is the heaviest we've definitely seen and felt this morning. we're on montgomery drive, about ten minutes away from downtown santa rosa. and i want to point your attention to the side of that hill. that's part of the villa, bar and restaurant. you can see that is where three large boulders slid down the side of that hill and fell onto montgomery drive earlier this morning. this is just how big those boulders were. one of the workers from santa rosa's public works and streets department estimated the largest one to measure around two cubic yards. that's why workers had to jackhammer and drill into the boulders to break it up into smaller pieces, before scooping them into clearing trucks. now, fortunately, no one was hurt with this incident. there was also no reported damage resulting from this rock slide. there were also no injuries in another incident that

damian trujillo nbc bay area news now protesters also out in force in southern california. this is downtown los angeles. the protest yesterday. they continued today. demonstrators started their march at city hall and moved through the streets, at some point even blocking intersections. in the end, everything was peaceful. police were there, though, to redirect traffic. well, how big of a role does the immigrant community documented or not hold in our california labor force? coming up on our 7:00 news, we're going to look at some of the numbers showing just how much our economy relies on this community. all right. let's take you to contra costa county. a health advisory is in effect still tonight after a weekend fire that ripped through parts of the martinez refinery. that fire is actually still burning tonight. it first sparked on saturday. neighbors quickly reported the flames thick, dark smoke spewing. you can see there from the refinery. we're told four people were rushed to the hospital with injuries related to that fire. now it is still burning. the fire is contained.
