joining us now is an instructor of medicine at ucla health. we hear a lot about inflammation. a lot about it. it's one of the buzziest terms in medicine. something my patients are coming into the office asking about. it's the reason tom brady famously made his own ice cream out of avocados tomatoes. it's helpful to break it down into acute and chronic. acute inflammation, you can see, it's your body's response to stress or injury. if you sprain your ankle or cut your leg on something, it turns red and swollen. that's good. that can be life saving. chronic inflammation or inflammation over weeks to months to years, that's different. that's when we get worried about cell damage in our bodies. it's linked to chronic diseases you can see like autoimmune diseases. >> is there situation where inflammation is a good thing? >> yeah. that short-term inflammation, the acute. if you get cut by an object, you get scraped on the sidewalk, inflammation goes to that area, makes it red and swollen. it prevents bacteria from getting to the rest of your body. in the short-term it's good. >> we
