sanj sanjay, i do want to ask you about if the president is returning to the white house, what would have been prudent to put in place in terms of medical equipment or even additional expertise to make sure that they could be prepared if things do go south? >> yep. well, part of this is to isolate the president, the patient in this case, because he has coronavirus, so he needs to be isolated within the white house. anybody that comes in contact with him is going to need to be in personal protective equipment, and that's going to be a bit of a risk, obviously, there. the white house has got all kinds of different resources, they have a white house medical unit there, but are they going to have -- dr. conley, i'm sure, will be there. will they have other experts, pulmonologists, doctors that are going to be at the white house that are going to be on very close standby? as far as machinery goes, one of the reasons you have someone like the president in a hospital is that you also have proximity to the intensive care unit should he need to be in the intensive care unit. they don't have t

sanj sanjay, as you heard, the country has patssed 8 million confirmed cases with 218,000 just yesterday. francis collins says he expects the daily cases to start rising as well. just how dangerous, sanjay, are these high numbers we're seeing explode right now? >> well, you know, it's very concerning, wolf. obviously, if you're starting off this sort of wave going into the colder weather at this high a level of viral transmission, it's just a lot that you all of a sudden can build on. if you're starting at a lower level, it takes a while to get into that sort of exponential growth, starting at 50,000, 60,000 newly infected people a day. if they're each potentially spreading it to two or three, you can see how quickly it can reach that number. a big part of the problem is hospitals. hospital bed capacity is something that hospital cities are looking at all over the country right now, and typically around this time of year it's around 60% or so full. looking at the map here, in many states around the country, occupancy rate is already quite high. if you're already high and going into flu s

this is a concern that you hear, sanj sanjay. it's a well-formulated question.can you explain what is being asked and what the answer is? >> yeah, and i would minimize these types of concerns because sometimes i think these types of concerns get minimized. this is a brand-new type of vaccine and just quickly basically, you know, vaccines have always worked with the basic precept that you would take a small amount of the virus, give it to somebody and their body would say that's a foreign thing, let me create immune cells to fight that if i ever see it again. this type of vaccine essentially is taking the genetic sequence of a portion of the virus and giving that to somebody and then saying make that portion of the virus over and over again and then after that your body will respond to that. so you've essentially made an entire vaccine-making machine out of the body as a result of this. now, what her question is is will it mutate cells? this messenger rna is not entering the nucleus of the human cell where it would interfere with dna. i think that's the nature of

sanj sanjay, we all watched the president yesterday, even as we watched the death toll continue to rise in the united states, 1,000 new deaths reported overnight. the president used different language on masks, but he also said that the administration issed in proceis in the process now of formulating a plan to deal with this. what was your takeaway? >> the same as yours, john. we are just hearing about the idea a plan will be formulated, but still didn't hear what that plan was. we didn't hear about galvanizing every citizen to do the right thing, to remind everyone that we're all in this together and all have a role to play here. what an opportunity to sort of lead. but i keep coming back. i've been talking about this since march. about testing and this idea that we need breakthroughs in testing, antigen testing, more widespread testing and i feel like we've been having these same conversations for several months now. what's the deal? has there been a real investment in testing? and at the same time, as you know, there's been some discussion about pulling back funds on testing. the id

sanj sanjay, this question is from renell in san francisco, how long after being exposed to the diseaseake for it to show up on a test? if someone encounters a person with a virus on thursday, maybe they test negative on friday, does that mean they didn't get it? >> well, the short answer is no. you can't say that for certain. couple of things to keep in mind, it does take a little bit of time after the virus gets no your body to get to a detectible sort of point. there is different testing, more sensitive than others, but it takes a little bit of time. second of all, you know, you might -- if the test is not performed at a time when the virus load is adequate, the test may come back negative even though the virus is inside your body. what we have been looking at is this idea of incubation between the time someone is exposed before they develop symptoms, they said it could be up to 14 days, that's where that came from, but it is closer to five days. now we know people actually can spread the virus even before they become symptomatic. so i would say probably two to three days probably on
