abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley is live at macarthur bart station. hearing from passengers who were on board when the smoke started. leslie. sounds like it was pretty scary. >> harrowing ordeal for passengers who were in a train car that filled with smoke and found themselves having to jump out of it. let's start off, though, first by taking a look at sky seven. this incident happened around 230 today. this afternoon. bart said an eastbound train started filling with smoke just short of the macarthur station, saying there was an equipment problem on the train. oakland fire responded to a two alarm fire incident, but it ended up not being a fire. terrified passengers were evacuated, though, and bart says there were no reports of injuries. all bart lines were stopped for more than an hour, so an absolute mess for travel >> this one i lost, i failed. >> abc seven news. they smelled smoke on the train long before it was still in the transbay tube, and they heard a series of pops before the train came to an abrupt stop. >> the train, just all of a sudden

abc news reporter zohreen shah has more on the quake >> we felt the earthquake here in the abc news l.a. bureau. it was a strong rattle and others across los angeles also reported feeling it in pasadena, a magnitude of 4.4, according to caltech. cbc's chopper was over in wilson high school in el sereno, which was evacuated as a precaution. you can see all the students there on the athletic field and l.a. county fire and lafd saying they are now in earthquake mode and checking buildings and other structures for any major damage. right now, there are no reports of injuries, so we can't predict earthquakes. >> we cannot. i'll say it more clearly uh- the what we can do is forecast, but it's still very exact. we'll say it's still we can only give a small numbers. and so we know after an earthquake like this, there is an increased chance of many aftershocks. but it's still not a very likely that we're going to get a larger event. >> there have been smaller earthquakes in california recently, but caltech says those are not believed to be connected to this one. zohreen shah, abc news, los angel
