tara moriarty has -- allie rasmus has more with a look. allie? >> reporter: protesters plan to be here seven days a week 24 hours a day and this is their campground and there are 75 to 100 tents out here some of them with signs out front expressing their frustration. this is the occupied oakland demonstration and you can see people are up and walking around. protesters have organized a schedule among themselves and during the overnight hours there is always a few people awake keeping an eye out for the rest of the group and keeping an eye out for police. police told ktvu channel 2 news they would not be kicking the protesters out last night and we are not sure how long that will last however. demonstrations began at 4:00 yesterday afternoon when 4 to 500 people metaphor a rally. they have a -- met for a rally. one thing that unifies them is the economic situation in this country and we spoke to a woman who said she got involved after her home was foreclosed a few months ago. >> there are all kinds of injustices right now whether it is corporate o

allie rasmus is in palo alto now to tell us what the police are looking for, good morning allie rasmus? >> reporter: they will be looking for traffic violations, right now and all around the school they have crossing guards and they are warning it is a high traffic area and people should use caution. they are under a program called operation safe passage and police will be enforcing it. here is a list of what they will be paying attention to. drivers failing to yield to pedestrians and jay walking, seat belt violations and drivers calling or texting while driving, that also poses a big threat. palo alto is not the only city doing that. here is a picture from earlier this year. they will also enforce it. now police say this program happens to just -- happens to come just days after a six-year- old was killed which happened in east palo alto. she was walking with her mother when a driver struck the little girl as she was going through the crosswalk again on her way to school. the city council will hold a special meeting on making safety improvements and meanwhile here in san jose, police

ktvu's allie rasmus, what are you seeing out there, allie?reporter: well, this just happened in the last couple of minutes or so. i'm gonna show you the scene. this is 14th and broadway. behind these people is frank ogawa plaza where the raid took place. up until about five minutes ago, we will seen about 100 protesters. some of their supporters were standing on this side of the metal barricade. at some point, we don't doe -- we don't know what happened or what provoked it but there was a squirmish between riot riot gear and protesters. up until about half an hour ago, things look pretty quiet here at frank ogawa plaza. this raid happened at 4:30 this morning. the police went down through the encampment and took down the tents. after that, police made some arrests. some of the protesters went to different locations here in downtown oakland. police arrested them at those different locations as well. when we got here back, things were pretty calm up until about a half-hour ago. we saw some people trying to return back to frank ogawa plaza plaza

here's allie rasmus with more. >> reporter: we got an update about 15 minutes ago, and they confirmed the suspects, the knife-wielding man, and an elderly woman have all died from their injuries at the hospital. this all happened at 7:30 in the morning. that's when a woman called 911 to report some sort of disturbance coming from that white house. police are still here gathering evidence. two police officers entered the home, and in the doorway, they discovered an elderly elderly man bleeding producely from stab wounds. officers went upstairs and that's where they found the man's wife, a woman in her 70s, also had stab wounds. the suspect is 44 years old. and when they discovered him he was armed. >> he had two knives held above the head, they used their device that shoots like a beanbag and when that was ineffective, they used deadly force. >> reporter: now, police say the 44-year-old suspect and the -- suspect and the two elderly stabbing victims were all part of the same family but at this point, police are not sure of their exact relationship. right now, officers are interviewing

new at noon, ktvu's allie rasmus joins us live with information just released by the san jose police department in the last hour. allie? >> reporter: actually, san jose police chief chris moore updated the number. he says san jose has had 37 homicides in all of this year. that's her than double the rate of last year, all of last year. so in light of all of that, police and the santa clara county d.a. had a press conference at san jose police headquarters. that press conference is still going on. at that conference, police had updates on two high-profile cases. the first, the hells angel shooting that happened -- that happened at the oakdale cemetery on saturday. police identified steven joseph ruiz as the man suspected of shooting and killing a fell local hells angel member at that funeral. police believe he and the victim got in an argument at the funeral right before that shooting happened and police say they do have a warrant for ruiz's arrest. but at this conference, police suggested ruiz might have been killed by other hells angels' members. >> he left his motorcycle at the scene

the movement is taking hold in downtown oakland and allie rasmus tells us activists are vowing to stayntil they are forced out, allie? >> reporter: well protesters say they will be here 24 hours a day seven days a week and this is their campground and you can see they are about 75 to 100 tents here. protesters have their signs out in front of their tents expressing their frustration with the political situation in this country. now even though camping in front of city haul is technically a vials -- city hall is technically a violation of the city code they will not kick them out. but they are not sure how long they will be able to stay and we will try to find out more about that. demonstrations started yesterday at 4:00 which is when 500 people metaphor a rally in front of -- met for a rally in front of city hall. they metaphor a variety of causes they are frustrated about but the one thing they are unified in is the economic situation of the country. >> i think wall street -- occupied wall street started from this and it is catching on from city to city to city. >> it all boils down t

allie rasmus is live outside the complex with a look at the damage. >> red cross representatives say a total of 29 people, including seven children, are now displaced after this apartment fire. it happened just after 1:00. it started in the building you see behind me. that apartment unit that is in the process of getting boarded up for you if i are battalion chief told us a resident was cooking on the stove and that's how the fire started. this apartment unit is part of a long rectangular building in this complex with 31 other apartment units in that building. they all share a common hallway. even though it's not visible from the outside, other units are damaged. >> there may be water damage, smoke damage, holes in the walls, and so forth. right now we have determined about nine families need assistance. however, there may be other families serious. >> now, this displaced resident describes some of the commotion area she told us in spanish that she came back to see neighbors running out of the building in their robes and slippers. other neighbors were knocking on doors warning people
