allie rasmus is joining us live with more about the race about to get underway. hi, allie. >> reporter: hi, claudine. this is the inflatable finish line and we will see the try athletes running out of the bay after swimming from alcatraz. it is part of the escape from alcatraz triathlon. there are already dozens of spectators lining up, ready to growth the athletes as they come out of bay. the swim is only a mile and a half long but the conditions are challenging. water temperature is 55 degrees. and the entire time they are fighting a four knot current that is dragging them towards the golden gate bridge. they can get to this spot and they will run on the red carpet. this is a triathlon. so the work doesn't stop there. they run over to the parking lot. inside the bags they have their towels and shoes and put those on and continue the rest of the race. >>> we will show you a map of the full course. after the mile and a half swim, there is a 18 mile bike ride that takes them to ocean beach and back. it is followed by a 8 mile run from the marina to baker beach. it

ktvu's allie rasmus explains why the red cross has been struggling to find temporary housing for the victims. >> reporter: flames engulfed a home in the complex in barrel geometry. the fire started at 11:00 and within minutes neighbors called for help. >> i start is to see the fire grow very intense really fast. >> reporter: the fire started on the third floor and you can see k-still see the damage from the window and balcony. the flames were limited to two units on the third floor, but the smoke and water damage is throughout the building. >> when we opened the door there was so much smoke coming out. >> reporter: a traumatic experience for this 10-year-old, her mind racing with questions as she ran out of building. >> are we going to live or not? what about my dog? my bad, what if he can't get out? but everything is okay. >> reporter: the fire, smoke and water damage forced the family and at least 50 other people out of their homes. 15 people had to spend the title knight in the apartment clubhouse. the red cross scrambled to find housing. >> it's been quite hard, because a lot of

allie rasmus is live now in san francisco with them very latest on this development. allie?eporter: well, first of all, that something suspicious ended up being a false alarm, but it was just before 8:00 when a taxi driver who was parked in this area, piers 30, 32, came up to us to say he had seen something suspicious, something that looked like a t- shirt floating in the area. he said he was planning on calls police, and within minutes, police and firefighters arrived. they came to check things out, but it was confirmed to me was a false alarm. it turned out to be a bowie in the water with some stuff attached to it. they did do a scan of the area as a precase. the case of missing 27-year-old victor mario is still considered an investigation. he is a corrections officer in vacaville. he and a friend went to the giants-dodgers game on monday night at at&t. they parked at the end of the parking lot at piers 30, 32, when according to a friend, mario stepped out of the car for just a minute, but never came back. his family and friends fear he may have fall into an the water off

ktvu channel 2 reporter allie rasmus is live now to explain the reason for this and what they are doing about it. good morning, allie. >> reporter: good morning. we just got an update for the number of people displaced. there have been three fires in san mateo in the last two weeks, a total 137 people have been displaced. one of the fires happened here 234 the building behind us. this is in read redwood city. the flames here spread an reached across this driveway. you can see on the balcony on the other side of the driveway. in the latest update from the red cross this morning, a total of 32 people who lived in this building can't go back home. they are saying in hotels and motels in the meantime. the red cross says so far everyone has a roof over their heads but, again, they are worried about running out of hotel space. one of the displaced residents came to check on his house. since this happened, he's been living in a hotel. >> especially right now to find some place to rent. >> with a 2-month-old? >> yes. >> reporter: now, over the weekend, the red cross responded to another apartme

let's go back to the desk. >>> allie rasmus is at the chest grove reservoir. talked to a member of the dive team, what are they saying? >> well, a 12-person team from the sheriff a hes of -- sheriff's office just arrived 15 minutes ago. we watched them unload their boat on that loading dock. so their boat is on the other side of the reservoir starting their work. search teams have scanned the area here before but now the disk team has sonar equipment. we want -- now the search team has sonar equipment. we watched them assemble it. the reservoir is as deep as 50 feet in some spots. so that sonar equipment allows a laptop on their boat. the image is klee. one investigators said -- said they can see shadows of objects 50 feet down. but this new estimate will allow them to -- equipment will allow them to rule out the possibility that they had before. >> we just want to be sure we can rule this water out. >> reporter: 15-year-old sierra lamar has not been -- supervisor pestal -- postal media hoaxes -- someone put a hoax and it went viral. there was even an address.

allie rasmus joining us live. she's at candle stick park where the journey will start for those spectators. >> the 112 u.s. open is happening 11 miles away from here but for people who are watching this is where their day starts. they're being asked to park in this parking lot at candle stick park where you see these cars pulling in behind the guys in the yellow vest, and that's because the area where the u.s. open is happening, olympic park it doesn't have the ability to handle all the cars and tourists that would otherwise drive there, so people here parking here are going to take one of 125 shuttles over to olympic park for the u.s. open. behind us is the security line. you can see security is pretty tight here. they do have metal detectors that shuttle passengers have to go through. there's a long list of things people can't bring with them, no food or beverages, no cell phones or cameras and no signs. the week long event started yesterday with some of the first practice rounds. golfers were checking out the c
