smith, arkansas, in the western edge of the state. and we saw hundreds of homes that had been inundated. that community has been dealing with flooding for the last several days. and the water is starting to recede there. but locals tell us they're dealing with this for weeks. it's just a devastating situation in that part of the state. parts of oklahoma are also seeing the waters you see but they're dealing with the aftereffects as well. stephanie, this is a slow-motion disaster affecting multiple states. states like iowa and missouri. nearly 300 river gauges throughout the country are at or above flood stage right now. and this all comes after weeks of severe weather. more rain is expected for this weekend, for this region. here in north little rock, over the weekend, local authorities had urged some residents to consider leaving. there had been false reports of a levee breach here. there had been an actual levee breach, not far from arkansas, but something they're dealing with for at least the coming days and coming weeks. stephanie

in arkansas alone we have seen an estimated $23 million daley in economic loss along the arkansas -- daily in economic loss along the arkansas river. the entire state and surrounding areas suffer. much of the infrastructure along these rivers was nirblee initially installed in the 1960's and 1970's and reaching the end of its shelf life. a backlog of maintenance projects compounds the issues and we can't keep putting temporary patches on systemic problems. for example, i recently co-sponsored bipartisan that would unlock billions of dollars in already collected fees to maintain our nation's federal ports and harbors. and many cases we have the money for infrastructure projects. however, red tape and bureaucracy slow down the process and prevent necessary work from occurring. the irony of delaying projects on our navigable waterways is that these projects often have tremendous economic returns, as high as 10 to 1 and 16 to 1. it makes economic sense and it's common sense to invest in watererways and infrastructure. unprecedented flooding such as we're observing should serve as a chanc

this on the arkansas river. there are five different locations from the arkansas river from oklahoma to arkansas, remember that goes across two states that are setting all-time record crests. mississippi river and st. louis expected to crest next tuesday around 46 feet. that's the second highest level on record. and then get this, some areas across that region have seen 300% to 400% more rain than they do in the month of may. so that 30-day period was exceptionally wet. let's talk about what's to come. look at the expected crest dates for some locations. you can see the flood stages here, well above what the -- the latest readings well above the flood stages. incredible amounts of water just moving across the mississippi river delta, and you can see all the dots and squares we've highlighted here with individual colors indicating all the river gauges with major, moderate and minor flooding that is occurring right now. you can see on this particular river gauge, for instance, the current level at 12.43 meters wit

it's not just the arkansas river.s going to happen after a little bit of a break, we haven't had a lot of rain in that region in about three days. here comes our next storm. it's a slow-moving storm, and it's going to send rounds of rainfall back into the flood zone. i don't think a lot of our rivers are going to get worse. it's just going to make them drop that much slower and the more stress we have on those levees the more problems that are going to exist. here's the rainfall forecast. this goes from today through thursday. this area of pink here is three inches of rain, widespread red. we saw gabe near the fort smith area here on the arkansas river. that's going to be where some of the heaviest rain is going to be. the other story today, grab that jacket as you head out the door. great lakes and northern new england it's in the 30s and 40s in some areas. it will be a beautiful afternoon, guys. this is some of the best weather of the week that we're going to see in areas of the mid-atlantic and through the south. >
