cnn pentagon correspondent barbara starr joins us with new details on this investigation. barbara, among those new details they've now identified at least some of those marines, right? >> reporter: absolutely, john. they moved very quickly on this. the marine corps is not all that big. those marines were known to people who saw the video. it is -- this is a unit now. it is widely believed out of camp lejeune, north carolina that served in afghanistan until late last year. two of the marines now who participated in that video, their names are known to the marine corps. they're moving very quickly to investigate all of this, both the marine corps investigation and the naval criminal investigative service investigation. it really couldn't be more serious. they want to nail this down very quickly, john. >> quick to investigate, barbara, also very quick to condemn. both at the military level and senior civilian administration officials. what is the sense inside the administration of why they thought it was so urgent not only to investigate but to try to condemn this and pretty f

barbara starr is live at the pentagon.here on these secret channels of communication that are happening. what is the white house saying? >> well, there hasn't really been any reaction from them about that particular story, zoraida. but, you know, i don't think it's too surprising that the american government would really try and find every channel it could to reach out to iran and to communicate u.s. intentions about all of this. you know, we have no formal real communication with that government and yet tensions are at an all of time high. what they want to do, what panetta wants to do is lay it out in public, make it very clear. no nuclear weapon, no closing of the strait of hormuz, you can't do that or we will respond. they don't want any miscalculation. they continue want any misunderstanding by iran. so the idea is put it out there in every channel you can, zoraida. >> there are some people who say, though, that that would never happen, closing the strait of hormuz would never happen because that would cripple their o

. >>> and also a view from the pent gorngs barbara starr, can you give any clarity about how this chopperines dead today? >> we are hearing the same thing that they are hearing on nick's end. u.s. military officials saying it is a mechanical problem, and these have happened in afghanistan before. it is a very tough environment in which to fly helicopters. the dust and the dirt kicks up, and mountains and rough topography there, and the weather can get very bad very quickly, and there is simply no indication at this point that the taliban brought it down. you know, the helicopters like these fly in pairs, so there would have been another helicopter nearby that possibly reported what problems it might have seen and would have been able to report if there was any enemy activity in the area at the time, brooke. >> at the same time, you have an afghan soldier, soldier shooting and killing six french soldiers in a military base, and now you have french president nicolas sarkozy saying he might pull the troops out early saying that the french troops are not there to be killed by afghan soldiers

barbara starr is working live from washington. good morning, barbara.share with us this morning. >> as you say, this is helmand province. this is an area where it is mainly u.s. marines serving. they are not yet saying the fatalities were marines but there are growing indications of marines being there indeed. of course, six families now get that dreaded knock at the door. the taliban as you might expect very quickly claiming responsibility. in fact, e-mailing our own producer in afghanistan that they shot the helicopter down. but the nato force coming back very strongly and saying there were no indications of enemy fire in the area. they believe it was some sort of mechanical issue that brought the helicopter down, zoraida. >> i believe it was specifically a text message that we received from the taliban. is that unusual or is this just a sign of the times? >> not that unusual these days. taliban are pretty communication savvy. they message out very frequently and they make a lot of statementses after every attack or after almost every situation in afg

i want to bring in correspondent barbara starr.is the report saying on aggressive tactics of iran? >> reporter: what they're talking about here is the irani regime may be more willing to conduct attacks inside the united states. that's a pretty shocking development. the thinking behind all of this is that the iranian regime right now trying to decide whether it will go for a nuclear weapon, looking for its own regime survival, basically looking to lash out, if you will. we saw that plot last year to try to assassinate the soviet ambassador at the behest of the iranians. so the question right now is what would make it rathe irania regime to paranoid that they might lash out. the concern is about nuclear weapons. oil sanctions, economic sanctions aimed at stopping them for thinking they can go for a nuclear weapon, that the price would be so high that they wouldn't do that. and at this hearing today, tough intelligence officials had a bit of a disagreement about whether the iranians are really there yet. is there enough bite on these
