bauer: it is an unusual selection process. here you have the second highest , constitutional office who is going to step into the role of president, should it become necessary, and is increasingly expected to have a very senior role in the government. the second-most important role in the government as an advisor, a troubleshooter and somebody who is a full partner in the it -- in a governmental administration. the person who, decide to that will be is the nominee of the party. granted, convention some have some role. in the past, conventions have made it clear that somebody who is on the mind of a presidential candidate might not pass muster. that is not usually the case. it is a personalized process and a privatized process. everything that is done in the selection of the vice presidential nominee is done essentially behind closed doors. vetting process by which the nominee is examined and scrutinized takes place closed doors. some of that has to take place behind closed doors, but nonetheless, it raises fundamental question

as one who was exposed to the very early rantings from bob bauer about this process, i can only say that the fact he has this platform to communicate is a very good thing. you know, john, it's an interesting question because i think we all agree in a very -- across the board that somebody who is qualified to be president is now the absolute first thing that needs to be taken into account but it's a political process. as a political prime process is a process. and that some of the considerations that i think traditionally people have felt were important politically really aren't. and i think the group agreed on this. vice presidents don't bring their states with them. okay? because you're actually voting for president, not vice president. we have numerous examples. lloyd bentsen was re-elected senator from texas as michael dukakis was losing texas rather substantially with lloyd bentsen on the ticket. obviously, john edwards didn't bring north carolina with him. you can look at many of these examples. so you know, they're not going to bring a state except under very unusual circumstances.

i've had the opportunity to watch bob bauer's career from a distance and the ark of his public service and legal career. do we have a chance to be part of this which is really special and i appreciate the bipartisan policy center doing this. i think you really truly is an extraordinary public service. i was probably eight the only person on the panel who has never been on the inside of the vice presidential selection process. as john has mentioned outside of the corporate border charitable boards part of the process of executive improvement and development. the think the first thing that really struck me about this in listening to the wonderful stories by the way. i am repeating them, was how complex this really was. the political and social media elements in the heading and confidentiality elements of all of these things broader level of complexity to this that far exceeds almost any other selection process that i'm aware of. i guess the analogy for me was that somebody says a jet engine is something that has 10,000 moving pieces and everyone of them has to work every time. this is i
